Tegretol

Has anyone on Tegretol for TN experienced weight gain of significance? I feel as though I have and it is adding to my depression of having TN in the first place.

i wouldn’t say i’ve had weight gain - but i can’t for the life of my get a single incy wincy bit of fat off. i’ve heard that others on tegretol find that they get some weight gain though. for me, it’s hard enough getting off the couch at the moment (i have atypical tn that is battering me all day, every day at the moment) let alone doing any exercise so i’m just trying to eat healthy and walk at least once a day - these are the things i can control. excuse my language but tegretol really sucks! i’ve just gone up to 1200mg a week ago and no relief yet. can i ask you what doseage you’re on and whether the depression has stemmed from tegretol use? i’ve been very “emotional” lately - it’s definately due to the tegretol i think. you’re welcome to private msg me if you’d rather this info stay private. thanks, susan.

oh yes, that is something else to make you depressed as if the TN isn’t bad enough. i have had to come to terms with being overweight as opposed to the pain, know which one i would rather. i also noticed susan’s comment, yes emotional too…stay well anne

I gained about 15 lbs in Dec/Jan being on Lyrica…that didn’t work at all for me. Finally got switched over to Tegretol. The pain IS better. I feel great with just a few tinges of pain here and there. That I can handle. However, after ditching the Lyrica I thought for sure that I would drop this weight and instead I am putting on a few more lbs, not able to take off anything. I am afraid I might be the size of a house soon. I don’t even feel like I am eating that badly! I have never had this issue with my weight before. I am not a small person at all but never thought this would balloon up to this point. And, I am on effexor for depression. I was really dark during the first 6 months of my TN. By the time they found a med I needed something.
Now, I am wondering what to do. My vision changed too, had to get glasses after having lasik surgery six years ago. So, do I go off teg and try something else (neurotin or trilepital?) or what??? not lyrica for sure. that stuff didn’t work for me!

Hope this helps. You are not alone…

Hi ladies I just wanted to tell you that I chatted to my Neuro about the weight gain/no weight loss problem. He’s put me on Topamax (Topiarimate) which will help fight the migraines I’ve been getting and has an added bonus or “side effect” of weight loss. Just thought you’d all like to know - I’ve just started on it so will update if i see any changes. xx Susan.
