I’ve been considering taking up swimming as an exercise and for stress relief. It just popped in my head that it may be painful. I’m going to try it, as I LOVE to swim but would be interested in hearing others experiences while swimming. I dread the thought of having to wrap and cover my face to get through such basic activities.
Also, I want to thank all of you for the amazing support I’ve felt since joining lwTN.
When my pain was "ON" i wouldn't even dare take a shower. No way i would have swam.Just water on my face would trigger the shocks. But if it's something you love, try it.
I did do swimming for a while, I just swam with my head out of the water, either doggy paddle or breast stroke. No problems for me because the cold water didn't touch my head.
I used to swim laps until TN appeared. I like to do the backstroke, but pain starts when I do. I don't enjoy doing the crawl. Breast stroke works. Prior to TN, I had taken water aerobic classes and now do stretching exercises in the water. I do a few yoga moves in the water. I love yoga but being upside down triggers pain.
I think one has to try the water and see what happens. First notice of any discomfort, stop.
I used to swim a lot and do water sports, but due to the TN, had to stop everything. This was a HUGE disappointment for me as I loved being out on the water. I can barely tolerate the beach now bc of the wind factor and only go when the weather is very calm. I call myself 'Surfergirl' only bc it reminds me of my happy past and memories of being in the water and I am grateful for those memories.
As of now, I cannot tolerate the cold water or even a light splash on my face. However, I would say try it to see how you feel and if you can tolerate it, then it can work out as a way to relax and might even help you. I find when I exercise, it is one of the few moments in the day when my pain stops and I can enjoy something fun for 30 minutes or an hour.
