i am having a different kind of pain than i normally do with my TN and im wondering if its something different or that maybe i have both types of TN, if thats possible. i now have constant burning pain still on the right side but closeer to my ear and im unable to eat or drink or talk at all. i went to the hospital but they wouldnt even address my TN. just gave me some fluids and benedryl for swelling. i usually have pain above my upper lip and through the side of my face but this is very different. if i even swallow its like a razor blade cutting down the side of my ear and it feels very tight, almost what i would think TMJ would be. i usually have pain that comes and goes but this doesnt go away until the pain meds put me to sleep.
It is quite possible to have both types of TN at the same time, or in slightly different zones on your face. The reaction you have to swallowing seems to suggest that you have triggers in the region served by the glossopharyngeal nerve. Are you under a neurologists care, and are you taking medications for your TN?
Did the hospital give you a specific reason in writing for refusing you an intervention in your pain? If they did, then you may have grounds for filing formal complaint with the State Board of Medical Examiners. Refusal to treat pain and to do so effectively is still recognized as malpractice, even though the Drug Enforcement Administration has its head up its behind in actively persecuting pain management specialists who "over-prescribe".

thank you for explaining things to me that ive been trying to get out of my doctors. i cant even get any types of explainations out of them and im seeing 2 different neurologist now that just seem to push me around each other, like if one doesnt want to deal with it, she sends me to the other one and the other one is now trying to tell me that she doesnt think my TN really sounds like TN to her. needless to say i am in the process of finding a new one but my insurance is limited to one hospital and they only have a few neurologists there that i can choose from and my reg. family doctor has washed her hands of it basically and is now just focusing on my depression and i understand that TN isnt her specialty but i just wish she would not make me feel like im making this all up just because she doesnt know what to do. i am on medication but after so many that didnt work, the neurologist wants to just start over with meds. that ive already been before, she now is having me take amitrytline again, this is the 3rd time ive been on it. their reason for not giving me pain meds is becasue they say it doesnt help stop the pain of the nerve so they dont feel like its resonable to perscribe it. i was able to get one of the neurlolgist to give me oxycodone but only for 1 time she said. i am going to let the new neurolgist know what you were saying about the triggers and maybe this one understands more about TN. thanks again
