Rash

Hi...has anyone developed a rash from Tegretol?? I started it a year and a half ago and after a few months had a rash around my eyes that would come and go. I thought it was from hair products. Now I have had to up my dosage to 1200 mgs a day and the rash is around my eyes...by my hairline and the back of my head. I plan to ask my Neuro surgeon on my first visit on Jan. 4th. It gets better and then itches sometimes. Nothing terrible. There is no way I can stop the Tegretol because the pain for me in awful...even when it is time for the next dose. I hate this. I cry daily. It has taken my life away. I know some of you have the same torment. I pray we all somehow get rid of this monster. Just thought I would see if anyone else had a rash.

Not to be an alarmist, Mary, my 'Rash' [from TEGRETOL] turned out to be Toxic Epidermal Necroylsis (2ND degree burns over 60% of my body). My 'Rash' itched and burned and I ignored these symptoms because THAT PAIN was less-than the TN PAIN.

If your 'Rash' starts to look like my profile pictures (see; TENS) I would not wait until Jan. 4th.

A 6 month (immediate?) recovery from TENS, including 5 days in a Burn-unit is nothing to take lightly! I have ongoing skincare procedures and precautions that I must adhere to.

I say 'immediate'; as for that 6 month period, I could take no other medication, aside from Cyclosporine...and that is a heavy-weight drug. bob

I got a rash on my face and the doctors kept telling me that a allergic reaction would have been widespread but once I stopped taking the Tegretol it went away. I did go out on in the sun that day so I am thinking that is what caused the race.

Hugs. I know your pain. I have flinched when my 2 year old tries to touch my face say "Mommy, I love you". I am crying inside b/c her touch hurts so much. Something as simple as your child touching you shouldn't hurt.

I'm still feeling my way around my second rash, that my neuro insists is not related to my meds (even tho when I stopped the gabapentin twice, the rash disappeared). I was on the gabapentin for weeks before it appeared, and his reasoning was that it wasn't all over my body either.....granted it was not on my midsection, back, or head. It was, however, all over my checks, arms, legs, and chin.

Now I'm two weeks into oxcarbazepine and am breaking out again. I've taken benadryl all day, hoping it will keep the itching at bay (and that it doesn't blister and burn like the reaction from gabapentin).....

Hopefully, yours was a reaction from the sun and you'll have no other problems :)

Although rash seems to be a relatively uncommon side effect from Neurontin, it does occur occasionally with that med and more often with Tegretol. In the drug side effects and interactions section for Tegretol at RxList.com, the following note is offered:

"Skin: Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) (see BOXED WARNING), pruritic and erythematous rashes, urticaria, photosensitivity reactions, alterations in skin pigmentation, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme and nodosum, purpura, aggravation of disseminated lupus erythematosus, alopecia, and diaphoresis. In certain cases, discontinuation of therapy may be necessary. "

Suggest you draw this information to your neurologists' attention. Any time you have outbreaks shortly after beginning a course of a new med, the presumptive evidence is that the med may be causing the reaction. However, it is also prudent for a doctor to check for evidence of Shingles or Lupus, when these effects occur.

Regards and Best,
