I have had Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia for about 32 years. I wondered how many people with it have Tonsil Stones. If you are unsure what they are read this link...
It explains it there. I have noticed that when I can see the Tonsil Stones it flares up my Neuralgia. When I can get the stones out my pain goes away in a day or so. I notice after a cold my Neuralia is bad. I wondered if the Tonsil Stones are putting pressure on the nerve. Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed anything like this.
Not got tonsil stones but I have had throat problems for about 12 years, infections and such which in the end was diagnosed as being caused by a butchers job being done when I had my tonsils removed as a child and not being removed properly I have had GPN for about five years and the pain I get is in the same place that I get from the tonsil infection the ENT specialists all say that the two are not connected but I am convinced it is.
You have GPN for 32 years and did not remove your tonsils? Just get that stuff out and see If it gets better. Tonsils have no use anymore once you are an adult.
After my throat pain started, the first thing was to remove the tonsils after about one year because I did not even know that something like GPN exists. It took me 3 years until I figured out that something like this exists.
Anyway, take the tonsils out and see if that horror stops.
Hi Mike. I can get the stones out of my tonsils. So I would not have my tonsils removed just to see if it worked. They are part of the immune system. I don't believe they are useless. I don't have constant pain like some people. Mine comes and goes. Over the years I have figured some things that trigger it and avoid it. Plus at my age (60) it would not be an easy surgery. Did it help you when you had your removed? I appreciate your input.
Hi Alan. Mine started at some point after surgery that was not related to my throat. But they made a mistake when they went to put me under and gave me the drugs to paralize my muscles first. I should have been asleep first. I remember pain shooting through my face and I reacted, then I could not move. I could hear them telling me they were going to put me asleep. When I woke my throat was very sore. But not unusual with surgery. I always wondered if they were in a hurry and accidently did damage to that nerve. I will never know for sure. My mother also had neuralgia but in her face. I do not worry as to why I have it. Just deal with it when it is acting up. Thanks for responding.

Well, taking the tonsils out did not help in regards of the GPN pain, but it stopped my constantly reaccuring gingervitis and throat infections.
Like I said before, by the time I took them out I did not even know that GPN exists an I thought that a cronic infection was the cause of my throat pain.
Ciao

I had nasty tonsils and tonsil stones and they added to the misery of GPN. My ENT said they needed to come out (9 years ago at age 50) which was before the diagnosis of GPN. The symptoms of GPN had gone on for several years before the tonsils came out, and the ENT thought all of my misery was caused by my tonsils…especially the right tonsil - IT WAS A NASTY GROSS TONSIL! Once they came out (the recovery, by the way, was a horrible experience) the GPN symptoms intensified and expanded. If I could go back I time, I don’t think I’d have them removed.
Hi Nikki, Thanks for that information. I have heard the older you are and have your tonsils removed the worse it is. I don't think the tonsils are the source of my neuralgia, but can add to the pain when the tonsil stones are there. Sorry you went through such a bad experience. How often do you have the pain now? I don't have it as much as I used to. But sure hate it when I do. Usually last about 2 weeks for me when it starts. It builds up in intensity then fades back away. But I have learned some things that make it worse for me and try to avoid them. What makes yours worse?
