I'm not sure what to make of them, just had my first appointment. He didn't want to hear or talk about pain, and mainly talked about getting off the meds, stop drinking coffee, stop smoking, said see a psychiatrist, schedule an MRI of the neck.
lol
I said that's fine and all, but I've tried lowering the dose and the pain was right back or worse, and I've heard nothing but horror stories about shrinks mislabeling. He talked about getting my wisdom teeth taken out. Going back in 3 weeks.
Do you have a Doctor of any kind that trust that you can talk about this to? Hey I believe a shrink is always helpful, but if you have TN it can't be shrinked away. Have you been told you have TN? So sorry about your visit, but none of what this Doctor makes sense to me. I've been to some bad appointments, but I think would have walked out at the you should stop drinking coffee part. Oh, and asked for my co-pay back! Really?
Good luck! I wouldn't see this one again, but that's me.
I had an MVD earlier this year for TN Abby. Constant pain every day for more than 2 years. Currently I'm on 100mg nortriptyline, 120mg cymbalta, and 40mg oxycontin, which has it managed halfway decent, but it took a long time to get here....
Wow...that's pretty bad! Why would you go off meds if your still in pain? I love my coffee and should quit smoking but sometimes it feels like that's all I have left, sad as it is. Do your wisdom teeth need to come out? Be careful about that and if you do get them out be careful about who does it!! Why a Psychiatrist and not just a counselor?
You'd think you'd hear more from someone who's supposed to be a "specialist".
I'll go back just to see where he goes with it. It was really annoying because I didn't smoke when the pain started, I'd quit for 3 years, then pain, stress, then smoking again. He wants an MRI of the neck to check for damage where others haven't looked yet, so maybe... my neuro has promised to write my prescriptions for as long as I need.
Also my coffee intake increased after getting on meds, after pain started, so I just don't see those as a cause. I have a follow up in 3 weeks so at least things should move quickly.
I hope you get some good results when you go back. The MRI might be a good thing. I think I need another one. I had one done for my neck and back in 2008 and it's Osteoarthritis and apparently my neck is worse than my back, I believe that. I think my neck is worse still. What does he think might be wrong with your neck?
That's rough that you had quit but yes all the pain and stress will do that. Coffee and smoking wouldn't have been a cause but they might be an irritant. I have chronic Sinusitis and of course the smoking irritates it so I use a saline solution. To a non smoker that must sound nuts.....

Please find another dr. I had the best pain dr here in Cincinnati. I can’t go to him anymore due to ins and I miss him. He has been the most amazing dr. Good luck and please don’t go back to this man.
I understand after having an MVD and the pain returned. I did have to lean on other Doctors after disaster visits with pain management Doctors. Some are great, but sometimes it take a few to find a good one. Sorry about your bad experience and hope something works. Still figuring out my situation 3 years after the MVD and 10 years with the whole mess. Good luck!
