One year post op mvd question-don't know what to think

I had my MVD sx 10/9/12 without any complications. My question is I can go a week or more without any pain and then I have an attack. The pain level is half of what it was or maybe even less but it still shows its face. Since it has been a full year do you think this is the best its going to be or can it still improve? What are my odds?

Hi mat,
I really don’t think anyone can comment on this…TN has a mind of its own unfortunately…I’ve heard conflicting comments from neurosurgeons and neurologists on all aspects of TN, so it’s really hard to know who’s right or what’s right.
I think that’s the biggest problem (aside from the pain) is the not knowing…

If you remember I had an 8 year remission on my right TN and a 10 year on my left side for my bilateral TN. Why? What caused it to be quiet for so long? What caused it to come back one side responding to meds, the other progressing and not responding to meds?
Why do some people become pain free completely after MVD, and others only some better and some not at all ?

No specialist of TN can in my opinion tell us anything for certain, because they just don’t know.
I’m 6 months post MVD, my med resistant pain now actually responds to 1 med ( opposed to being on 3 meds and no relief at all) I consider that a success!
Of course I would have liked to be off all meds or at least at a low dose, but so far that doesn’t seem likely. But who knows what the future holds…?

If you’re not on any med at all maybe if you added a low dose med you might not experience any attacks at all? Something to consider and discuss with your neuro maybe?
Low dose would still allow you to function…
Sorry I wish I had an answer for all of us…keep up the hope!

Thank you so much for all of your information. Extremely helpful. God please bless all of us!!!!
