Hello all PPP's (periodic pain people)!
There seems to be a preference for MVD over gammaknife treatment in the United States? Anybody know why?
Hi Pain Man...I am having the MVD on friday the 6 of jan..and the reason my nuero gave me as to why it would be better for is because of my age, i am 56 , the fact that i had a good health history , no high blood pressure, diabetes, etc and that it would last longer since i was younger. The gamma knife he said would only last a few years 4-5 and would have to be done over again . I don't know what the difference is in the cost. But my insurance will cover the majority of it.....does this help?.

There was a long discussion regarding GK very recently under the heading Gamma Knive if you put it into the search engine top right or look on Albee's page as he has just had it done and you will find the discussion there.
Thanks for the comments folks! I will have a look at that discussion.
I'm only researching the possibilities at the moment if my self med does not yield results.
Self med being isolating the trigger.
Have quit alcohol for the new year and will eliminate different foods as I go forward.
Alcohol is an immidiate trigger to extreme pain for me , lesser pain comes randomly, but I think it all has to do with pressurising of the blood flow vessels to the head, and the alcohol deffinetly caused pressure to the sinuses area, veins in the temples, etc
Anyway i'll keep posting on any improvements as I go.
Good luck all.
My understanding (I have had 2 MVDs) was that the MVD fixes the cause of the nerve issues ie the compression of the nerve instead of just cutting the nerve. I know it is a lot more complicated than that but this is the basic understanding. At the TNA conf they really did not recommend the gammaknife. They were not against it but favored getting to the root cause.
Hope that helps,
brog
Which kind of tn do you have?
Quick update folks, 2 weeks in to anti-alcohol regime and no pains to report, a slight 'buzz' but no more.
I had good old fashioned ATN but over the years it had stopped being random and was only triggered by alcohol ( any amount, even a good Italian sauce with wine ).
So, I'll update again in a few weeks.
Missing the boozy nights out though! You can only drink so much coke!
