MVD with Dr Casey - Hotel recommendations?

Good morning! I’m getting ready for my 2nd MVD - this time with Dr. Casey!! For those of you who traveled from out of town/state for your surgery, what hotel do you recommend (or not recommend)? I saw the list of hotels in Roseville on Dr. Casey’s website but when I looked at the reviews on TripAdvisor they seemed to be really mixed. I thought some of you might have more helpful reviews. My top concerns are cleanliness & quiet. I had a very hard time with noise/sound after my 1st MVD.

Also, how soon were you able to wash your hair after surgery? I know it seems silly but dealing with my dirty hair for so long after my first MVD was kind of awful.

We stayed at Candlewood Suites in Warren, Mi. My surgery was at Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Point, just a 10-15 minute ride away from the hotel. It was about 40 minutes north of Dr. Casey’s office in Riverview, but it was more important to be near the hospital to us. What I liked about this chain is: A. You have two rooms: a bedroom and a kitchen/living room with a sofabed. This was nice as we could each have our own bed and our own TV. B. It has a recliner–not as comfy as a LazyBoy, but do-able with pillows. I find I sleep better in a recliner after surgery.

This was the only extended stay that had a recliner. I called every extended stay hotel in the area.

It was clean and quiet. We stayed about 10 days. In fact, we had two rooms for some of the time so another family member could visit. Ask them to put you at the end of the hall. They change out your towels at the front desk, but only clean once a week. It was nice since I didn’t feel like going out to eat; we could eat soup, Lean Cuisines, cereal, etc., in our suite. (I had swallowing problems, so we had to get Ensure, yogurt and cream soups for about a week.) There is a Walmart about 10 minutes away so you can get groceries. They also have a small gym. I went for walks every day and even did 20 minutes on the elliptical a few times.

I also considered AirBnB, but couldn’t find one that I felt comfortable with. I’ve never really stayed at one, and I didn’t want any surprises. For example, one guy promised me 24 hours to lock in the room (while I checked with family members), but then pulled the reservation within hours. Another didn’t have good ratings. I am told good ratings are very important.

A few more tips: Bring an ice pack. Consider Audible or download a bunch of podcasts. I didn’t feel like reading. Bring a neck pillow as well as another favorite pillow. Confirm whether your hospital has private rooms. As I was being wheeled to surgery, I found out this hospital didn’t have private room. That was a nightmare as my roommate talked all night long. Take your stool softeners every day.

Good luck and God bless.

Oh, I forgot about hair. Seems like I washed it within a few days.

Thank you, Leah!

That was exactly the type of info I was searching for! I will check out that hotel. A suite versus a single room would be much better during the early recovery phase. The recliner is something I hadn’t considered. I slept propped up on a wedge pillow in bed after my first MVD but I think the recliner would be even better.

I didn’t even think to ask about a private room at the hospital - I just assumed it would be private. I can’t imagine a shared room during an MVD recovery :flushed: I guess it’s only a couple of nights but still…

I hope you are pain free and I truly appreciate your response!

We stayed at the Hampton in Roseville. Then the second night (we had to stay over unexpectedly) everything was booked. I stayed at the Days Inn.Suite. It was very retro and a little musty, but clean and cheap!
