MVD Surgery

Hi, I just had MVD surgery last Tuesday. The surgery went well, and the doctor said it was needed (which I sorta knew). I had horrible reactions to every single pain killer they used, and high blood pressure medicine - that wasn't good at all.

I'm concerned because I am still getting minor shocks, about two to three a day. I'm hoping these will gradually go away, but I would like to know if it's common. I had TN for about ten years, and it gradually got worse and worse. My last bout was pretty debilitating, which was why I chose MVD.

I've just had MVD recently and Ihave had phantom shocks but not minor shocks. I believe you are supposed to wait a few weeks before worrying about it too much. You can get lidocaine patch to wear to take away the residual pain

Thank you. I’m very glad to hear that. I couldn’t figure out why it would happen, but it’s good to know it is to be expected. I got this horrible feeling that I was going to have to go back and get more surgery, which would not have been pleasant. .

By the way, how can you tell the difference between phantom shocks and real ones?

Well I have the answer to that one now! It's been 10 weeks - since MVD

I was at Kohls and had been in and out of the cold, and there was a .25 pain on a scale of 1-10, I freaked out and came on here and Red reminded me (as my surgeon had told me) that the nerve may take several months to "settle" -- if minor shocks not supposed to worry for a year - unless it was really 100% back

The "Phantom shocks" I can only say, is that I touch my cheek and think what was that? It's like the difference between slamming your finger in a door - or just having it go numb kinda for a min. while typing a long time. Weird and hard to describe

OH -- and if I were you - I would keep a pain diary until it goes away / gets worse / stays same -- possible triggers

and scale your pain each time

Thanks, really appreciate the feedback. Since the condition isn't very common, it's difficult to find information. And, I have to admit, getting shocked after the surgery was disturbing and depressing.

I've had 3 more this week - but not the zap shocks of old - just a pain that is noticable - not burning or - I just know the location and will have PTSD over it for a long time! I'm going to start charting and call my surgeon at the 6 month mark unless I know the hurricaine is back in full force!

I still have my lucky pain face patches - loads of them -- pain came for 1 hr or less 3x this week - like I said on a scale of 1-10 these would be below a one but starting to worry me - I just started job hunting for the first time since Oct. 2010!

I had MVD surgery Aug. of 2010 and I had the little sting "twinges" that started about 5 months later, I have never been completely off of my medication because my surgeon said it would take about 6 months to a year for the nerve to heal from surgery so I have been taking a very small amount of tegretol 100mg daily. I have not had any bad attacks only the minor twinges that are reminders that I did once have the horrible TN pain. I am hoping they will go away one day but my surgeon told me I could possibly always have them. Now, they have started on the other side of my face. But, I can deal with them and I do not live in fear of that horrible pain, I know what they are and so for they have only been reminders. Good Luck to you,

Linda

I'm having MVD on Jan. 25th (hooray 8 days away!) and in my research, if you still have pain when you wake up ... it's decreases over time and within 4-6 weeks it should pretty much be gone. So I think you've probably still got some recovery time to heal and for all of the pain to go away. I hope that is the case for you!! Heal quick!

Best Wishes Jessica G for successful surgery on the 25th. Great Attitude to be looking forward to it!

The weird thing about my minute and bothersome (vs devestating) is that I woke up and none of this till week 10.

Waiting for surgeon to email back
