Making toothbrushing less painful

I know this has been covered before, but does anyone have any new thoughts on brushing ones teeth without wanting to double over in pain? This is by far the worst symptom that I have. I've been reading about that new toothbrush that is made using a 3D printer and brushes your teeth in 6 seconds. I want one! I think I might be able to stand 6 seconds...

Have your doc or dentist call you in…lidocaine mouthwash ! Here they call it magic mouthwash!

This was an earlier copy of a post that I wrote:

I went through an 8 day period where brushing was difficult. Lessons Learned: 1) I used a baby toothbrush 2) brush where you can and avoid the triggers. 3) floss where you can and avoid the triggers 4) I used baby toothpaste which you can swallow due to swishing caused pain 5) brush your tongue- this gave me a refreshed feeling 6) use toothpaste on a q-tip on the painful teeth. 7) I used mouthwash which I sipped through a straw and then let back through the straw when finished 8) I drank water after food and try to swish as much as possible 8) used non sugar breath strips 9) rub your painful teeth with your finger that has toothpaste10) use your tongue as much as possible as that saliva helps prevent tooth decay.

Hope some of these ideas can help! Not being able to brush my teeth was worse than not be able to talk or eat solid food!!

Wishing you the best! Tina

Thank you! This is wonderful. By the way, I read on LifeHacker that you don't need to spit, I don't know if it's true or not, but it's been a lifesaver for me!

That was the worst thing for me.Just touching that upper right side would send me into a sickening spiral of pain.Hell of a way to start the day.But i really wouldn't know until i tried it.I would brush that area very lightly and if i got a shock, just use mouth wash or hydrogen peroxide.Taste bad,but cleans really well.I didn't know about Lidocaine at the time.It sounds like a good tool,if not a solution.

Yes! Thanks Victoria.. I had discovered that link when trying to learn to brush without brushing. LOL My adult toothpaste warned "do not swallow". I think it could be the fluoride. So when I have to swallow and not swish and spit my toothpaste I get the Baby Toothpaste which is safe for swallowing. I just took about 45 minutes in the evening. Got in my easy chair and did all my oral hygiene with all my equipment. Put on my favorite new age music and just moved real slow and easy. I gradually learned exactly which parts of my mouth I could touch. Sometimes it changed every day. I don't know if you can brush your tongue but that was a life saver! Just take it slow, do what you can. Sometimes if possible just brush even with the pain that you can stand that particular day. I really treated my brushing time as one of my most important times of the day. Sending you healing thoughts. Tina

I bought a childs toothbrush...they are much softer! I had some success with this...hope this helps!

Hi Mimi Remember to go very slow. If the tinniest portion can be brushed that is an accomplishment. On the painful part I switched to a q-tip with toothpaste. What I found is that there was more to brush without pain than I thought. At the worse point of my pain I probably spent a good half hour brushing my teeth. I would get all my brushing tools with the tinniest of toothpaste and a glass of water with a straw (because otherwise I would wiggle my mouth) and I would sit it my easy chair with the most relaxing of music. I gave myself really big mental "gold star" for this accomplishment each day! Obviously I must believe my brushing teeth is important! LOL. Truly wishing you the best! Tina
