LWTN and Skunks

TJ Here:

A while back we attempted to have a discussion with the leadership of this forum that went pretty well except with a few. Once those two withdrew, it went very well. The concern of the community managers was quite simple. A singular point of view was acceptable, everything else was not. Viewpoints contrary to that view point were moderated, members suspended threats made etc.

There were many people who spent much of their time criticizing people who had looked into other possible causes of TN as well as treatment such as Pain management, Cyber knife, chiropractic. There was an attempt to make this board an advocacy group, to stop DSM-IV. (despite the fact it actually opened pain treatment for many) This is not the first community where this had become a problem. Back at the beginning I made the mistake of fighting back, going on discussion boards and squabbling with those who attacked. I even found myself defending viewpoint I totally disagreed with hoping for reasonable discussion. That did nothing but create even more squabbling.

A turning point for me was the day a friend said, “Don’t get into a pissing contest with a skunk.” The metaphor struck home … and I stopped going into forums to defend open discussion. It’s not necessary. (Don't mistake this with pure quackery and "natural cures" and the folks who promote them, poof and they are gone, we are still evidence based. We just need to recognize that peer reviewed isn't all its cracked up to be, the peers usually share the same viewpoint....)

Now, here’s the kicker: Those who have been doing the criticizing and attacking contrary viewpoints on these forums have NOT improved their lives or others in the least. If exploratory brain surgery worked for you fine. If someone else however uses it as an example, their may be a problem.

I AM GOING TO ASK ONE LAST TIME to think differently. It is time stop for all of you to start thinking differently quit criticizing people and look for what you can learn from them. Started to take note of their good points – there are many. Looking at their good points will open a door for you. If you back off your massive egos, and allow folks to LEARN and assimilate as much information as possible. They then have tools to deal with their disease.

We have a family of skunks living by my barn. Other than the constant stink, they actually are pretty good neighbors. They eliminate a lot of vermin and snakes. But despite all of that, the stink is too much and they are going to lose their happy home. Despite how much good they do, I frankly am tired of 3 threads a day being started to defend one point of view or another with some of the WORST anecdotal evidence I have ever seen. WE ARE NOT HELPING EACH OTHER. It will STOP. Discuss away - That's fine, point to resources - That's fine, share YOUR EXPERIENCES ( not your hairdressers third cousins next door neighbor) - That's fine. Debate with each other - that's fine BUT the instant any of it becomes "PERSONAL" its over.

IF you are not a TN patient please be VERY careful in what you say or do. You easily be misunderstood. We are an evidenced based community. While evidence may vary we don't allow for antimed propagandizing here.

TJ, Community Manager

Interesting, I I feel I may have over stepped these boundaries on occasion, and been personnel, to those on the receiving end, apologies, when you feel strongly about something manners can take second place.

Whilst not entirely sure you were referring to myself,

'While evidence may vary we don't allow for antimed propagandizing here', I purely stated it was symptomatic in it's action. This post is too ambiguous in its intent and I feel might have been better served to have been directed at individuals, bearing in mind it is the few who are in argument. Just leaves everyone confused.

That has nothing to do with you Moth. Quit acting like you got caught with your hand in the cookie jar. Trust me on this. IF someone crosses the line, they hear about it directly and its taken care of even more directly.

We had an experience earlier this day that has left us with one fewer member who had a real problem with the "medical profession" not meeting his needs and not being nearly as smart as he and Dr. Google. (not to mention a potti mouth)

Own (as you do) what you say. FWIW there are a number of physicians, Doctors, Nurses, Physical therapists, at least one Psychiatrist, the former Dean of a Major Medical School, There is a former director of an NIH research unit that developed a cure for a type of cancer (in cows but a cure none the less) A biological medication that has treated millions, just shipped off last year a vaccine that stopped Ebola (it was developed for Lyme, but that is a different story) and I could go on. BUT ON THESE BOARDS we have 7,000 plus folks who are all PEERS. Helping each other is what its about. Challenging ones profession, abilities, experience is just assinine. Debate the merits, debate the theory and HOPEFULLY something will help someone say "yeah I get that" If it stimulates someones thinking, prods them to check it, makes the take time to learn EVEN if what got them going turns out to be utter nonsense, it was successful and helpful.

I come from a long line of pharmacists, They all thought I was nuts when I became a "mechanic" Nuttier yet when I patented a $20,000.00 pair of pliers (still being sold) They were somewhat calmed down when ai moved into teaching/research when my health precluded me from mechanicing. I never could understand HOW we also ended up with a dentist, chiropractor and god forbid my daughter a professional tennis player (now a Judge) They were ALL idiots in my book. But they all had an interest...... We won't even talk about the preacher.

I don't have a touchy feely bone in my body, that I have to live with. Seenie (from mod support) is trying to teach me. So yeah I speak in circles sometimes in an attempt to not irritate.

I was fishing, but the cookie jar still has me chuckling 12 hours later, interesting to know all of the above.

I'm assuming at $20,000, said pliers have rubber grips.

No, but they glow in the dark..........

Excepting the fact you manage to sell pliers at $20,000 ( Dell Boy would be in awe), considering you can buy a reasonable pair for ten quid at B&Q, I would have to question your business acumen. Had you made them harder to find, repeat sales might have really taken off.

Ah but its the sizzle that sells not the steak. I called them an "instrument" and distributed them through a pharmaceutical company. I work part time for my wife these days. I'm amazed at how she can have 2 nearly identical sewing machines sitting next to each other, and the one for "quilters" sells for considerably more (not to mention "pet vacuums")

Dell Boy would like your style,

Presently filing off 'Dyson' from an appliance I have to hand. Please pass on the name of your Pharmaceutical Company, they seem like a soft touch, and my liposuction machine is the dog's.

Cool idea. Wish I thought of it....... A buddy of mine developed what was called the Du Ran Ring for mitral valve repair and the instrument for installing it. People came from all over the world to learn the technique. It was hard to keep a straight face as he lectured. Carlos' hobbies were endurance riding (horse stuff) and exotic sheep. Aside from the fact the Du Ran Ring has save tens of thousands of folks lives, The original tool and ring(s) has rendered MILLIONS of ewe's sterile. Doctor Duran developed the system from the ring and tool he used to castrate his sheep... He had an AH-HA moment one spring day. Not that he wasn't brilliant. He has also learned to grow new autologous mitral valves in the lab from stem cells. They work in dogs so it won't be long. No more pig parts.
