I am two months post MVD. My facial swelling immediately after my MVD was extreme. If you were looking at my from the front you would not have been able to see my ear on the right side. My neck was also very swollen to the point that they were taking a measuring tape to monitor it. While the swelling has decreased my lower jaw line is still quite swollen. No answer has been given other than it being noted. Has anyone else had this experience?
Sorry, I have not had MVD surgery yet so I don't know what to tell you. I hope others who have had it will respond to your question. I just wanted to let you know I saw it and hope it goes away soon. XXOO
Patty,
What did the NS’s office say? I didn’t experience any swelling so I don’t know…although everyone’s surgery is different and we all react differently. I would call the NS and ask again!
(( hugs )) Mimi
My neuro is concerned and thinks it maybe from the manipulation of the eighth nerve. Not sure though. I will be having another MRI to see if the nerve was damaged. I had a great appt with him. He confirms my TN diagnosis despite Dr. K’s reversal of diagnosis. Also agreed with me on my assesment of neurosurgeon’s ego and lack of bedside manner. As soon as he saw the OR report he gave a big sigh and said this was not good news. He also pushed back my back to work date to Feb 1/14 to give the eight nerve time to heal, my dancing eyes time to stop dancing and my ability to maintain balance in a stimulating environment time to improve. I still can not read from books. The amount of words on two pages is just too much for me. I do all my reading on my ipad. This is also a result of the eighth nerve being manipulated. Here I thought it was a surgery dealing only with my fifth nerve. So about the swelling, really only guesses at this point.
Glad you have a supportive neuro!!! Let me know how the MRI goes etc…I forgot about the 8th nerve manipulation! Oh Patty, I hope your eyes stop dancing and you start to feel better all around. I’m sorry to hear about your experience with Dr. K.
My post op was by phone and not with him. The women in his office have been very compassionate.
Happy to hear your work date has been pushed…you need to focus on you.
Thinking of you my friend, positive thoughts, hope you get some answers soon,
Mimi xx
I agree that his office ladies are amazing. Such compassionate and caring people in his office. I do feel so much better most of the time. Seems silly to move the date back but I guess he knows better than I do. I am down to 200mg cr in the morning and the same at nite. Thats where he, the neurologist, wants me to stay till my next visit. A few good zappers but overall there is improvement.
While some swelling is normal, this extreme swelling is not. I am ten days post-op and the swelling behind my ear is going down. I had some slight swelling in my face, but the emphasis is on the word slight. I had a bad bruise on my lower lip from the 8th nerve monitor.
Hi Patty
I’m so sorry that you have had such issues since the surgery.
Just a quick answer to you wondering why the eight nerve was damaged when you thought the surgery was all about the fifth. When the cerebellum is retracted to get down to the fifth nerve, the seventh/eight nerve complex can be stretched and this can cause the issues you’re describing.
Just out of curiosity, did you have that nerve complex monitored during the surgery?
I am eight weeks today post MVD. Had both fifth and seventh decompressed. It is taking a while for the seventh nerve to heal, it was a bit trigger happy in the beginning but is settling. The healing from that seventh/ eighth nerve complex can take its own sweet time so take heart.
Excellent you are in the hands of a good neuro who was willing to reverse Dr. K. Please keep us up to date with what’s happening.
Keep Heart

Hi Bellalarke, so good to hear things are settling down for you too. There was a large artery looped around my eighth nerve which had to be moved. It was an unusual placement for it. I had “planned” on having the mvd, no complications of course, and waking up healed and ready for work. Silly me to be so focused on the success of the surgery and not allowing for anything else. Guess that is what hope is though. I am still better off than before most day and I am extremely thankful for that. I hope things continue in a positive direction for you.
