My doctor, at my request, prescribed me lidocaine gel to apply to my tongue w q-tip 3-4 times a day. I, um, ignored the 3-4 times a day and used it, um, more. Now I have, what I hope, is just an ulcer or chemical burn where I have been applying it. Always scared something nasty is going to crop up...and hoping this is just a result of the gel. I have quit using it completely and switched just to patches for 12 hours at night. Anyone experience this?
For several weeks, I have staining pain in the joint of my upper and lower jaw. So badly, I can hardly speak or eat;
I tried sensodyne toothpaste, before eating; but no result; I went to my pharmacist ( after talking to my doctor ) for something ( like a spray ) used by the dentist before injecting the anaesthetic fluid in the jaw.
I read on the Internet, the name of Lidocaïne ; So my pharmacist gave a tube of Xylocaine 2% Gel;
when I came home I read the leaflet in the box and found out that is was only to be used extraneous; So I think you cannot apply it inside the mouth. Furthermore I read on the information leaflet that special attention is drawn on people with epilepsy and nerval problems. So I am afraid of using it;
But the pain in my joint is still there; I take 4x900 mg Gabapentine and 3 x 10 mg Lioresal ( Baclofenum ); for my TN.
I don't have the heavy and severe pains anymore; but the pain in my jaw makes is very difficult to eat; Also sometimes soaring pain in my head; a little bit higher as my jaw.
Does anyone has some experience with this kind of pain in the joint. Will this pain go away after a few weeks;
thanks
Hi Dyane! I know exactly what you are going through, as I have the same symptoms. With my last 'flare-up' it is all I can do to drink liquids without severe pain in my lower jaw. Most of my TN seems to affect the upper lip area and the lower right of my jaw. I live in Quebec Province in Canada, so our medications are probably not labelled the same as in the US, but I've had some relief with 'Orajel', which is primarily used for children's teething problems. This can be safely used in the mouth and does numb the pain for awhile. It contains Benzocaine 20%. This type of medication should be easily found in the US, but under different names.
I have had TN for over twelve years, but have not taken any medication for it. Find either heat or cold helps when I am in extreme pain.

Purple74,
I think you should call your pharmacist right away and ask him!

Hi Dyane,
I use Lignocaine Gel (same product as you we just call it the different name here in Australia) after coming across it during one of my many inpatient stays. Was suggested to me by a chemo nurse who indicated it was often used for individuals having radiation therapy on their throats. The lignocaine is effective enough to give these clients an opportunity to eat or drink as it numbs lining of throat. I see a Pain Specialist (an anaesthetist) who prescribes me a Ketamine inhalant for use during intense days where my pains at a 7/10 or higher. I also have a ketamine based topical cream. l that I had made at a compounding pharmacy to my Drs instructions. Works like a charm. If my pain becomes unmanageable I usually end up on a Ketamine infusion for a week or so which is no fun at all but seems to re-configure the pain to being manageable. Unfortunately I lucked out & got MS & Trigeminal so treatment options are a little hit & miss. I've found the Lignocaine to be the quickest & have the least risk. My teeth feel like they are being ripped out through the roof of my mouth most days. No gentle pain, just either no pain or agony. Its taken me five years to get my meds right (fingers crossed!) & the Ketamine based products seem to have the best effect for me. I hope you find a solution to your challenges. Kind regards Judy
Hi,
I agree with the person who said to call your pharmacist. I use orajel severe pain formula on my tongue and gums when I hurt. I have noticed I have developed some small sores from this. It does not have precautions about how long to use it--just 4x per day.
Try not to panic. Your sores will likely go away. Just do not use it internally anymore.

I have diabetes and the thing of not eating and drinking bothers it to the point I ended up in the hospital. My sugar went down to 33 and as you said you can't talk because of the pain. The head person came in after a couple of days and said Medicare will only cover another 2 days. I wrote out on my Boogie Board (its a board my husband got me so I can write everything instead of talking and I can carry it) that I'm still in pain and my sugar is back up to 54 so I guess you can thro me the f out of here. Sorry but I was very mad at them for a few thing they didn't do. They put me on the neurology floor and the head doctor for the time I was there had no idea what TN is and he charged me for this at the end I told him to stay out you all ready told me you don't anything about TN
I am taking Carbamazepine 200mg 5 times a day and they raise my Gabapentin 100mg 1ea 4 times a day to 2ea 4 times a day. The other thing is the people at the hospital see these on my list even though my list I give them shows what each one is for. I do use the Lidocaine Hydrochoride jelly USP 2% inside and outside my mouth and a mouthwash Antacid/diphen/lido 1:1:1 I use the gel and the mouthwash only when the pain is really bad. But at that point I can't get my mouth open to use them. Even the gel hurts to put it on the outside. Doubling the Gabapentin seem to be working except I get nervous spams in my hands the doctor says that happens with some people
Please be extra cautious with Lidocaine. Internal our topical. Don't let it get into your eyes. Don't let children anywhere near it. Don't let anyone else touch an area to which you have applied lidocaine; especially a baby or child that might touch the area and then put his/her hand in his/her mouth. My neuro had an infant patient go into siezures after coming in contact with topical lidocaine.
Wow…great info… I guess for original poster , using lidocaine mouthwash is out of tne question, at least till sores go away… I understand why any of us have taken more of anything to stop pain
More than we should take it.
I agree to call the pharmacist about the ulcerated area. The biggest problem with local anesthetics is that you CAN overdose with them to the point of having seizures and unconsciousness/apnea. Medications are absorbed very quickly from the mouth, especially under the tongue, so it is important to follow directions very carefully. Overdose symptoms depends on the plasma concentration that is absorbed and starts with:
I use the topical 5% everyday and haven't yet had any reaction. After reading the instructions and talking to the pharmacist I learned that mine can be used anywhere, even inside the mouth. It's used mainly for burns so unless your topical has other things in it I don't think it can give chemical burns since it's used to help with the pain of burns. It works. I use it on my face and in my mouth. It really works for me (many people use it for denture pain). You may be allergic to the lidocaine or something in the gel. However, make sure. xylocaine isn't the same thing as lidocaine etc. Are you subject to canker sores? I get them whenever I get sick and yes I put the lidocaine on them to stop the pain.
Lidocaine is simply the generic name for this particular amide local anesthetic. Trade names include Xylocaine, Lidoderm, Lingocaine. It is sometimes combined with other local anesthetics or other drugs. Examples include Emla/ Oraqix (lidocaine and prilocaine combination); LidoProfen (ketamine, ketoprofen, lidocaine combination). It is very important to follow any directions very carefully.
I do not know about blisters on the tongue, but I do know get too much of it in your system it can cause a irregular heartbeat. Please take it as prescribed.
For those who may be interested. I got over my fear. I was scared to call the pharmacist and have him tell me no way could that do it and then I would be living in fear of what the small white circle is...At any rate, I asked him and said it was kind of like a sore right where I had been holding q-tip...and he said yes, absolutely it's more like a burn. oh what a relief. guess even topicals can cause problems...better follow directions I guess.
Hi, I sure hope you are fine and your tongue is now better or getting better. I have had TMJ for 50 years from a bad accident I was in as a child. The TN wasn't discovered until a few years ago but I think it'd been there a long time before. I tried taking the pills all Neurologists try giving us for TN. I got so sick and my face broke out completely. If I even walked outside my face literally would burn. I quit taking them. I can't take antiflammatories like ibuprofen because I have a kidney disease.
What I have found besides pain pills is lidocaine patches I can customize for the right side around the jaw. I have not had to use them lately. I had a kidney replaced in Sept of 2013 and it has had a very positive effect on both my TMJ and TN. I do use an over the counter crème called Zostrix to my jaw area. Don't apply it with your fingers. It is full of very hot stuff. I use a Q-tip to apply & apply thinly, don't touch & be careful washing your face afterward, I say this with experience, ha! The more you use it the less your pain will be. Especially for someone like me with full blown arthritis in my right jaw joint now.
My pain has started to turn into mostly muscle pain in the head, jaw, neck and shoulders. My doc will see if it's still just muscle pain on my next visit and if so we may start trying to switch meds around to see if they can deal with that. I've always had that also since the accident so my head automatically does it even if there is no other actual pain there. It has programmed my brain to tighten up to protect that area.
I just want you to know that no matter how many years you go through this you will have good days and bad days. You may someday go into remission. I'm hoping I may have. I think 50 years is long enough.. And I have other things to deal with that are more important - staying alive and learning to enjoy life again!!
Thanks for letting me get this out.
Lori
I'm glad you're having improvements! that is a long time to suffer. Hope you are heading into a remission. My tongue is doing better just since my mind has been put at ease. Stress makes my pain intensify!

Hi, It sounds like you need to contact your doctor and explain what has happened. If you have developed an allergy to the gel, using patches may just move the reaction to where you're applying them. Whenever you're not sure what's going on, its best to seek medical advise. :)
Can this cream be used for metallic bitter taste in the mouth and mine is primarily the tongue. This symptom is part of GN. Will it make your tongue go numb? I like the idea of oragel but I would need to use so much of it. Thanks, Sharon
Yes, I used it to make my tongue numb. Only lasts about 15-30 mins...hence why i was using it so much. didn't seem dangerous...but I guess that's why it has usage instructions and is a RX. The patches are helpful and I am not overusing them...under if anything. I'm not sure the gel would have been a problem if I hadn't been using it improperly. But I doubt I'll try again unless it gets so bad I can't eat and then I'll just use it then.
