How important is timing with these meds?

I take trileptal 2 times per day. I set an alarm so that I will take them at the same time every day. Wednesday night, I took my night pill about 35 minutes late and have been in pain while eating (some while talking) ever since. Was this just due to me missing my normal time? Will I be able to regulate again? If so, how long will it take?

I am really sad about this, because it was going so well. My husband and I leave next week for vacation to celebrate our 10 year anniversary and it looks like I’m going to be in pain. I am so mad at myself for letting work come in the way of me taking my pill on time! Any advice?

i have wondered if timing of medication was important ... i have been late several times ... once the meds kick in, the pain is manageable again

Timing is everything for me. If I am late then tomorrow pays for it, and tonight the pain will begin. Like Rebecca, once the meds kick in it is manageable it's just getting to that place that is tough. hth.

I didn't even know that we are supposed to stick to a certain time when we take our meds. I don't think it makes much difference to me if I take my evening meds at 5 or 8 p.m., I still have my ok days and my bad days, just like before I was put on medication.

I take trileptal too…I am not very rigid about keeping on an exact schedule. if I am having a bad day I may take my night meds at 5:00 if it has been a good day it might be 11:00. I do always try to take the morning dose 12 hours after the night dose whatever time that was and then readadjust the hours to normal 9-9…when I can. I think your pain increase is just a coincidence.

I take trileptal at 9 in the morning and the other within 6 hours later!!! It does make a differance... for me :) Plus if I oversleep and take the first dose late, I still take my second dose around 3 p.m..

I take 1600mg of Tegretol daily. 3 pills in the am, 3 pills around noon and 2 pills around 6pm. On this dose timing is everything for me. However when I was on lower dose I could wait and play around a bit more with the times.

I have been taking Trileptal 2x - 3x a day for the last 20mths. At first I could hardly function on it, then over time I seem to acclimate. At the beginning, I would notice a sharp increase in pain if I was late or skipped a dose for whatever reason. However, being on the med for some time now, I seem to be able to be a little more lax in my timing. I still can't skip a dose without pain increase, but I can be late a couple of hours. It always takes me about 4-5 days to get my pain back to a more "manageable" level once it increases. I do hope yours is soon under control once again.
