My name is Adriana and i have 21 years old, i am from Romania!
I want to tell you my story and maybe u can help me with some informations.
I am suffering from 16 years old of TN.
I only took the medicine, and it didn;t help me much.
My only chance now is accupuncture, is working but i am searching for a long time treatment, that can help me to have at least one year of peace!
In Romania we don;t have such a good health domain so the surgery is out of discussion.
Can you tell me where i can find a good hospital where i can be treated good from this TN?
How much it’s cost?
Thank you so much and i really hope that someone will answer me!
(sorry for my english)

Thank you so much for you advises!
About medicine, i took carbamazepine and it ruined my life, i got sick in other parts, like hormonal disorder and big problems with stomach…
I am a student and is really hard for me to study with this medicine that makes me dissy!
That;s why i am searching for a surgery or something.
I am making accupucture from one week and i still have the pains, i hope untill i will finish the session all the pain will go!
Sometimes i use procaine in my nose and the pains are gone, but ony sometimes.
I wanted to make the surgery in Romania, but they dessagree, because they told me i am too young and the risk are pretty high!
But thank you RO, in your links i found another doctor from Romania, who maybe will agree to operate me.
What kind of treatment do u take?
And have you done any kind of surgery with this NT?
I will start myself a blog for the people from Romania, where we can discuss all about TN.
In Romania doesen;t exist any association for the people with TN.
Thank you all for answering to my help and I wish you all straight!!!

Hi Adriana, I haven’t had a surgery yet -my doctor says that I shouldn’t get the Microvascular Decompression procedure as long as my meds still work as I am still young and my body could theoretically find a way to cope. If you are searching for a good hospital try the one over here in Prague - Czech Republic- It has the best reputation in my country and some very good surgeons that are specialized in trigeminal treatment (gamma knife,MVD and if that doesn’t work there is a possibility to have specialized treatments ) . Don’t know about the price but both of our countries are in the EU so some kind of Pan European insurance could apply. Best of luck
Oh forgot the name of the hospital - Vojenska nemocnice Praha Stresovice here is their web page: http://www.uvn.cz/
it’s in czech so use google translate to get the page in english
Hii adriana I dont know about any hospitals or anything but could you possible try a different medication. I used to take carbamazepine but had to stop it at 200 mg because I was falling asleep in my lessons and it was making my hands numb. There a loads of different meds and combination of meds you can try for this condition. I too find it difficult to to study, im currently taking exams to try and get into university! Hope you find the help you need!
Hi Alana/Adriana
I was studying math and physics when I first got my facial pain-at first the pain was infrequent but that slowly changed to a constant burning sensation with larger attacks several times a week-took some time to find the reason and I couldn’t continue with my exams so I had to quit and find a job as a programmer.
Alana I know what you mean my doctor put me on tegretol(crabamazepine) 200mg when I was finally diagnosed with TN after more than two years. It made me feel sleepy at took a lot of joy out of my life.
After two years he switched me to gabapentin(neurotonin- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabapentin ) I take higher doses(900mg) but don’t feel so sleepy, my mind is clear and I am capable of coping with my pain(get it only 1-2x a month).
A good Idea is to get some anti-depressants as well. Having constant pain leads to depression in most TN patients over time. Depression can be caused by low levels of seretonin, that is the neurotransmitter your body is already using up to transmit the pain- so one leads to the other. I found that a small dose of Velafaxin( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venlafaxine 50mg it is normally used in higher doses-up to 200mg- to stop pain in TN patients ) together with gabapentin is enough to stop most of the pain and get back most of the joy in life.
One more thing I found out for myself - it’s easier to concentrate on memorizing stuff than creating larger logical constructs - by that I mean it could be easier to study medicine, history, philosophy computer science than math or physics. But this only applies to me another person might not even find that an obstacle. A lot of luck with your studies!
Thankyou Petr, I am on anti-depressants but not actually for depression but for their effect on nerve pain but they are not working and I’m not really expecting them too but at least they help me to sleep. Ive learnt a lot about how they work from my psychology lessons. In my biology lessons we have just started learning about the nervous system which is also quite useful. Glad to hear you found something which works for you! And good luck Adriana in also finding something to help with the pain!
Great to hear that you can continue on with your studies! I was never diagnosed with depression and I do not think I have one in the classical description(even though depression has many manifestations).
My doctor prescribed the antidepressants for the TN pain but they did not help on their own or with tegretol only in combination with gabapentin. I think it’s a question of finding the right combination for you there is no one way easy solution.
