Having alot of pain 8 weeks after MVD surgery

Hi Everyone

I have hoping/wondering if anyone can let me know if they experience the same thing, I had the MVD surgery april 3rd 2012 and of course right after the surgery my head hurt but the twitching was little, I could breath out of my left side of my mose, my ear was not pulsing. Caught a sinus virus but all in all I was feeling not to bad 4 weeks later I went back to work. One week after I started back I got this stabbing sharp head pain I went home, over the next few weeks my scar started hurting and it was real tender, My twitching is worse, and my nose is plugged again, my ear is also having sharp pain and the pulsing feel like as if I have water in my ear.

I did see the surgeon and I am waiting for another MRI and a spinal tap. but has anyone experienced this and then is slowing went away?

Is this part of the healing procedure?

if you have please let me know

thank you

CL

Hi CL, I had my second MVD on April 19th was doing GREAT, then 12 days later had to have another surgery to fix a CSF leak! So far, no more leaking...but my hubby took me out to eat at a steakhouse Saturday and I started chewing on a piece of really tender steak....after just a few chews, I had a pain shoot out from an ear on the back side of my temple are...back around my scar area. I thought it was just a fluke, so I started eat again and as soon as I chewed meat again, the pain came back...so I stopped eating! I do remember getting pain at the incision site with my first surgery....but it was tolerable. Hope you feel better!

Thanks Tammy , The surgeon said it could be three things, a CSF leak, scar tissue, or the plastic ear bone that put in blew out when I blew my nose a few days after the surgery.

So then is should all come down?

Tammy how long after your first one did you have your second one if you don't mind me asking?

I felt so good and now I feel so bad, If even my head would stop hurting it kind of feels like the day after my surgery

I was feeling fantastic after my MVD....seven days later I had an appt to get my stitches out...my dr wasn't in the clinic so a nurse took them out...fluid began to pour out of my incision when she took the stitches out. I even ask her what it was because there was so much, but she just said it was fluid from swelling!!! It leaked for about 5 hours but finally stopped...a few hours later, I got the most HORRIBLE headache!!! But I layed down and went to sleep and when I woke, the headache was gone and the leak stopped. Four days later, it began to leak again...I called the dr office and they told me to come right in...I knew something was wrong and it was serious. I told my dr I didn't eat or drink anything and brought an overnight bag. I had my second surgery two hours later! It was 12 days from surgery 1 to surgery 2.

After my 2nd(CSF leak) surgery, my dr told me not to lay down all the way...just recline. When you lay flat the headache gets better but it also lets more of the spinal fluid stay in your head, which creates more pressure in your head.

What really ticks me off is that...they don't tell you(or my surgeon or his staff didn't) what to watch for!!! I was told when I signed all the surgery docs that a CSF leak was only a 1% risk so they just skimmed over it. I wish I would have known what to watch for! Now I've been told that I'm at a high risk for an additional leak b/c once you have one, it's sometimes hard to control.

Oh also, two weeks ago my ear on my surgery side, all of a sudden started feeling like potatoe chips were being crunched inside of it. It also felt like it was completely full of fluid. Doesn't hurt, just feels weird. I called dr office, they said it "could" be another CSF leak but it could just be a normal side effect of the surgery.

My mom had an MVD on 29th March, then a csf leak, then a second csf leak and infection.

The wound hasn't been reopened at all. I queried that the leak must be coming from the skull and that it would surely keep happening unless that was secured. The doctor said there is a possibility of that happening and as long as the wound is secure and healed the body will absorb any excess csf.

I had normalish feeling of fluid/water in my ear, took several weeks to clear up ---

Thanks. I just had a MRI and then they seen fluikd at the back of my neck they had me go for a lumbar puncturre and tons of different X rays. The said I have a CFS leak but they have to pin point the exact spot. I have developed. Soreness in the back of my neck and in my glands. I hope it just heals on its. Own . It has been only c weeks now but my head has two spots were it hurts to touch and myy head feels like a bad tooth ache

Hi Cathie,

just wondered whether you could provide an update on how your recovery went and whether the fluid did go away on its own as I have been experiencing similar symptoms 6 weeks post MVD. The main issue is head pressure, particularly in the morning and evening.

Thanks
