I was taking Topamax and had to decrease my dose after breaking my foot (after stumbling from Topamax/Oxcarbazapine combination). After my foot healed, I increased my dose again and then started losing my hair. I didn't really notice a difference in pain control after this increase so asked my doc if I could quit taking it. He took me off and increased my Oxcarbazapine. Needless to say, this wasn't the best move. So now I am back on the Topamax (yay) but the lower dose for now. Has anyone been able to stop their hair from falling out from medications? I know it is just hair vs. pain, but I just have gotten it grown back out after it thinning from Lamictal. My husband is bald and people say we look alike, but I think this is pushing it! HELP!
Hi Debbie.. I have not been very active here lately however I was one of the very first to join this wonderful site a few years back when my tn was very bad. I am on a combination of tegretol...400mg/day and Depakote..500mg/day.
After a week in the hospital 3 years ago due to an extremly bad episode of tn, my new neurologist put me on 1000mg/day of Depakote. My hair was falling out in bunches. Pain was gone..and thankfully still is... but I was devastated that my nice thick hair was clogging up the drain and all over the bathroom floor! My hairstylist reccommended a very gentle shampoo which helped and as I was able to decrease my meds and let my system adjust to the new meds...I am no longer losing so much hair. It does grow back and be sure to take a good multi vitamin as wel as biotin which is good for the hair and nails...Oh also my female neuro asst. said to make sure to take a good D vitamin as many of these anti-seizure meds rob the body of that. Hope this gives you some encouragement.
I’m sorry about your hair loss. I have the opposite effect. My hair is growing unbelievably fast. It is due to the klonopin. WebMD states that excessive hair growth or hair loss may be side effects. I’m glad I don’t have hair loss but I do have weight gain since I’ve been on the klonopin. This is the most I’ve ever weighed. Although none of us want weight gain, it is worth it to be out of pain. And at first the klonopin really worked well. But recently it hasn’t worked as well. For some of us, we have to constantly try different meds. I wished all of us could be pain free. I hope you can find a med that works well and has side effects that you can tolerate.
