Has anyone had an MVD of the Trigeminal Nerve only and gotten relief from ear pain? I ask becuase I am scheduled for an MVD on 11/27/12 and have both face and ear pain on the left side. My pain started in my ear 4 years ago and my face didn't get involved until the ear pain was extremely intense. I am on 1200 mg of Tegratol daily and 40mg Baclofen. I have begun to have more and more break through pain and going up any more on my meds is not an option for me. I am having the surgery at John's Hopkins and Dr. Lim is optimistic that both types of pain will be taken care of. Has anyone had a similar experience?
I'm anxiously counting the days until I will be one step closer to back to normal.
Yes! It did with me. I had “regular facial TN” plus horrific pain in the back of my throat and left ear. The ear was the worst! I had my MVD 11 days ago, Nov 5. I have ZERO pain. My ear is still a little numb and i still can’t hear 100% but it’s getting better every day. I’m so happy I did it!!!
I told my surgeon about it and he said he would check other areas in my brain when he went in. Besides finding an artery compressing the 5th cranial nerve, he also found an artery wrapped around my 7th and 8th cranial nerves. I honestly don’t know if those nerves have anything to do with the ear pain, but I’m glad he looked around just in case.
Nothing was getting rid of my pain and it was terrible. I hope the surgery helps you. No lie, it was really rough the first week for me, but worth it all. And this is coming from someone that still has 12 staples in her head! LoL
I am having MVD on rt side on 11/27/12. Same day as you. I had it on left side last year, and it did relieve my severe ear pain as well as the face pain. Good luck, every outcome is different. Keep positive. We will be in together in 2 different areas. Ill be in toronto ontario canada.
Thanks for the information. It is good to hear from actual sufferers that the ear pain may go too. I trust my surgeon but its good to hear frm patients also. Jacqueline, I hope all goes well for you on the day we go in. It’s like sharing the experience with someone as its happening. I’ll be sure to let you and everyone know how I am fairing after surgery.
I still have some slight ear pain, but its nothing like it was and I stayed on the antidepressant for now to keep it from bothering me. I tried to stop taking it, but the boring came back, but on a scale of 1-10 it was a 1, more annoying than anything. I think with time, even that will be gone, I did have more pain all over after the surgery, but once my nerves settled down this has been amazing!
Just a quick note from the hospital. 2 days after surgery and i am feeling okay. I have some pain im my neck, head , and incision but the pain meds are doing the trick. No TN pain so far bar still have some mild ear pain. I just got the release from OT and should be going home today. I’ll write more when I home and rested from the trip. Jacqueline I hope your surgery went well also.
I'm glad you're surgery went well Karen. Don't be discouraged if you still have some of the old pain. The nerve(s) need time to heal and relax. I hope you keep feeling better every day!
