Gamma Knife vs. MVD

Medications are no longer an option for me. My doctors are sending me in two different directions for solutions. I’m going to see a doc that only does Gamma Knife (primarily) and I am consulting with another doc that has many options, including MVD. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I have heard that if you have the Gamma Knife, the MVD will not work? I am so confused and in so much pain. I have terrible migraines on top of the the TN. I don’t know how anyone makes these decisions while we are so sick.

Which type of surgery depends on whether or not your pain is typical or atypical. MVD surgery is absolutely the best option for typical TN. I had successful MVD surgery Nov. 2010, but my TN was typical.

Do not go to just any neurosurgeon. Your outcome depends on the skill of your neurosurgeon. Seek out the very best TN neurosurgeon your insurance will cover.

All my best in finding pain relief,

Judy

MVD can work after gamma knife just the chances of a good outcome do go down. If you have typical TN I would suggest you consider the MVD first and then Gamma Knife if needed.

Hi Connie…those are the exact two options I was given and I have no idea what to do. I was also give the balloon thing, but I pretty much have ruled that out…just sounds creepy to me going through my face. I am in a lot of pain right now…I just don’t know what to do. Good luck to you and your decision…let us know…Mary

Yes, Judy,

I would also like to join Gloria in applauding you for making a distinction about the success of MVD being "absolutely the best option for typical TN".

Connie, my heart goes out to you in a profound way. I am sorry that medicinal treatment has failed you, and that you are in so much pain. Here's hoping that you receive the best advice possible on which would be of the most benefit to you between these two procedures. I know pain seems impair thought processes and decision making. I sincerely wish you all the best, and success with whichever way you choose to go. I would go with my gut on this, if I were you, it is usually right. I hope you have good support in your family and friends in whatever road you choose.

My prayers will definitely be with you.

Hugs,

Stef

How do you know if you have Typical or Atpical TN? Thanks in advance.
