Ear Pain - Knots behind ear?

I have a question. My left ear has really been bad today. The whole side of my face has. I have a "knot" that rolls around behind my left ear. Sometimes it seems really large- sometimes not.

I don't know if this could be a lymph node? or - I had that root canal back in January--- maybe an infection? My ear is a bit swollen and red.

I've gotten pain rashes on the left side of my face before though.

I can't see the neurologist until June- and I'm not sure what to make of this.

Any one else have lumps that roll a bit on the side where they are troubled?

Any replies would be gratefully appreciated.

xx

Hello Beekeeper,
Sorry to hear your having pain, not sure about the knot behind your ear. The doctor can answer that question for you. Sometimes I break out with a rash behind my left ear when my trigeminal neuralgia flares, its on my effected side where aimhad my MVD. I think I noticed it more after my surgery. For me dont know why it happens but also get discomfort there also. Its so bizarre but for me its related to my TN. Let us know what happens and good luck!

Have you noticed if the lump is larger when you have ear pain? I get a lump behind my ear at times, too. I use a light downward stroke with the pressure I would use if I were applying lotion to gently move the fluid toward my collarbone.

Additionally, it's not unusual for it to build up when their are sinus or allergy issues which often create inflammation that can also affect the ears so certain times of the year may create additional irritation.

Oh my, I have several of these and just thought they were lumps I developed with age! Must learn to join the dots!

Well, I guess the knot/lump this is normal w/ this. I tried to get into see my family doctor y'day or one day this week. She says I have to wait to see the neurologist. Called in some vicodin. I read on the FB forum about this man w/ necrosis- Some one told me it sounds like I have a bone infection from the root canal... SO, yes- I am -- scared. I can't afford one of those 3D scans to see if it is necrosis in my jaw bone- and I have phoned my dentist - waiting to get an appt.- about the root canal issue again. I don't know. I was up all night in pain..... I am really tired now and am going to lay back down. -- My endodontist said if the root canal didn't settle down in a month- he would redo what my dentist did--- but that packing they used (the dentist-- that antiseptic stuff)- made me feel really sick. It was there a week- and the endodontist leaves it there a MONTH. ugh!!!! X-rays show it is stable- but it does not feel stable. I keep reading where when you get work REDONE- it doesn't help. It hurts at below my ear lobe- where my mandible is-- very sore to touch- just on the left side. Root canal was done on upper left tooth- first molar- beside "vampire" tooth- the pointed one... If It was ANYWHERE else I would have it pulled out of my head. :( Neuro-- again- isn't until June and I'm sitting here wondering about bone infection and necrosis and my body rejecting the root canal....... live in tiny rural area. Tough. xx Thanks for all of the kind words/answers.

I'm sorry to hear how much you are suffering. It's a shame you don't have more options available for doctor care. In the meantime it might be helpful to journal your symptoms as it may give you and your doctor/dentists some helpful information.

Given all that you've been through it's not a surprise your lymph system is trying to clear a lot of junk from your body...hence the lumps. Hang in there and keep us posted.

Hugs,

Laura

Hi Beekeeper, sorry you’re have so much pain and so many worries, have you called neurologist’s office and asked to get on a cancellation list?

They don't have one- . When I called my family doc y'day, I spoke to her asst.-- and I said -can't the doctor please "pull some strings"- get me in sooner???? - The asst. said I was lucky to get in in 3 months. Sigh- I don't know what to do anymore. I journal my symptoms- and as of January nothing has changed except I get mottled skin now- a bit purple-. I don't know if it's part of Raynaud's.

I just don't know exactly what to do - . I wish I had not read about necrosis, however. I don't have dental insurance- and 3D scans are something not quite possible.

Oh waiting so long is a big drain on your energy and the mind goes wandering into frightful scenarios. Try bringing your thoughts back to some present activity. Every moment spent not worrying can bring a bit of relief, and these moments add up significantly.

Have you applied heat to the painful side?

Yes, your mind does wander. The pain - or whatever this is- has caused cognitive problems. Basic cognitive issues... Memory problems... Getting out of the house is almost impossible.

Yes, I was told by a friend to use a sock w/ rice in it. It is better that hot water bottles... just don't microwave it too long-- lol-- and don't use instant rice. :)
