Does nerve regeneration hurt?

Hi,

I am 7 months post MVD Surgery. I was completely numb after surgery, but over time I did get most of the feelings back. Currently, I’m still numb in my lips, teeth and gum. I feel nerve movements 24/7 with weird sensation like pulling, twisting and spinning of nerve fibers. When it twist out of control like 100 miles per hour, it hurts a lot. I have checked myself to the emergency room at 5 months post surgery because of this pain. They did MRI and said everything looks normal. My neurosurgeon said the nerves are waking up and to give it time. I read that after 6 months if numbness doesn’t return then it’s most likely permanent damage. My neurosurgeon said it could take up to a year. I don’t know if this is nerve regenerating or do I have anesthesia doloresa. Does anyone experience this?

I’m dealing with this on and off. I was told to give it a year or longer. Very uncomfortable I know. I am numb on the right side but less heavy. Topomax has helped to alleviate the heaviness. Last night was miserable. Today was fine. the feeling comes in and out. If you accidentally fall asleep on the surgical side I find I have issues. Allowing the hair dryer near my face, bending over. Don’t touch your face even when it feels better. Don’t rub your jaw line, or touch the incision. I wear a hoodie sweatshirt to keep my head warm. When’s it’s really bad don’t brush the teeth and slightly drop the jaw when sitting and avoid going out in the cold. I used to get upset if I had to up the meds again. Now I just do it. A bad day is just a bad day. Do what you have to. Come here, ask for help. The beast does sleep when we do thank God. I was also afraid of the AD diagnosis. I don’t look at it anymore. One day at a time. Best wishes to you.
