Has anyone got any ideas on cleaning teeth. This starts off pain for me. I can manage my 'good' side without too much trouble but 'bad' side proves difficult. I put off going to the denist as much as possible as always worried he may set off bad attack. I worry about my long term dental health!
HI Clare.
I completely understand your concern. I did not see a dentist for 3 years because of the pain I would go through when I went. What made things worse was that I wasn't taking care of my teeth at home as well as I used to because of the pain. I was only able to lightly brush my teeth and I had to use warm water to rinse. I had to completely give up on flossing. (Gross, I know.)
After 3 years I finally decided to see a sedation dentist because I could actually see cavities. It was the best idea ever! He did IV sedation for my first two 3-hr visits (that's how much work my teeth needed!). After getting all the major things fixed I started using N2O (laughing gas) for my other appointments. None of this prevented me from suffering through the pain all that touching would trigger, but it made it possible for me to get things taken care of.
Maybe that's something you can try. I will warn you though: it can get expensive. My insurance did not cover the sedation.
Thank you, ihold. That may be an idea to try.

Tried lidocaine mouthwash at home? Prescription…many here love it.
I take Effexor for my mouth pain it was greatly reduced..but it still hurt to floss my teeth.. and then my GP gave me meloxicam an anti inflammatory for something else. A car accident I was recently in and and I was able to floss without too much pain anymore and the pain didn't last for 24 hrs either. :)
Big issue. Mildly sedate yourself, get someone to drive you and go for it. Gently floss. I know my trigger teeth on the right side, so I use extra care. I do however like the idea of of IV sedation. Best wishes.
I too didn't see the dentist for almost 10 years...im 25 years old now. I finally decided to go with sedation dentistry (pills). I had an attack when I got home (had a filling replaced where my sharp attacks happen). I was still a little sedated and numb in the mouth but I could still feel it. By the next day the attack was over and I was back to my "regular pain". The sedation made it so that I was able to get my teeth cleaned and for him to fix EVERYTHING that needed to be fixed in one sitting.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Wishing you all a pain free time. x
I had this problem too before I got my medication all sorted. Mouthwash would set it off as well, just a different temperature of something on my gums or touching my gums set off the pain. I rubbed toothpaste on the actual tooth, avoiding the gum area. That way I still got the fluoride protection toothpaste has. And when I broke a tooth near the end of last year I went to a sedation dentist to get that fixed and ... he said that I had excellent gum health! :) So toothpaste on my finger into the tooth was okay I guess!
I brush my teeth regardless of pain. But when I am having pain, I brush VERY slowly and gently. Do not put off dental cleanings. I was told to come every 6 months AT LEAST with TN because it helps keep stuff from building up so bad on your teeth. If you have bad buildup, you are likely to have a set-off of pain because they have to dig and scrape a lot harder.
