I use a heading pad to take the edge off…but other than that, nothing works except increasing my meds ( 1600mg Tegretol & 600mg Neurontin) I’m trying not to increase right now…
Hope you find something that works soon!
(( hugs )) Mimi
I use an ice pack for the burning pain, it really helps me. My pain Dr. told me not use heat,Ii admit I tried the heat at first but it made me feel dizzy and naseaous? (spelling). I hope you find some relief soon.
I meant to say is it common for the pain to move to other areas and what is the burning pain from I get the electric shocks are when an artery hits the nerve an advice will help just trying to figure this out after 3 years of dr not telling me anything!!! ayre said:
thank you is it come for the burning sensation to move to other areas over time with type 2 tn??????
Lots of very cold ice water and possibly talk to you’re FP about the possible use of anti anxiety meds. Hope you find relief soon. I know how debilitating the burning can be. We’re her for you. You’re in my prayers.
I thought I was the only one dealing with the burning sensation. Mine starts from the shocks...seem like...and go from a slow burn along my jaw line to my complete right jaw. When it happens it is debiliating and I can't do anything until it passes. I eventually have to take a pain medication like Lortab or Percocet and that alone is killing me. None of the doctors or neurologist I have seen seem to know what I am talking about. I can not function once that pain starts-it has even sent me to the er because it was so bad! Whew...glad to know I am not suffering alone!
My oral surgeon prescribed me a compound cream of capsaicin and lidocaine. It helps for break through pain but only if you apply it daily. I'm on gabapentin and tegratol. It's helping a lot with the shooting, burning, electric shock pains and I still have breakthrough pain with the more chronic, constant, dull, achy jaw pain that worsens as night time comes. It's worse between 6 and 1am.
Meds will help of you find the right meds for you. I'm sorry you're going through this. I'd find a good neurologist. That's what I did. I pay out of pocket for him but he's worth it!
Yes that is common. The burning pain is your trigeminal nerve firing over and over again because it's irritated or damaged somehow. It happened to me after dental surgery.
It can also be caused by a blood vessel compressing the nerve or a tumor compressing the nerve. You NEED an MRI to find out what is causing this. If nothing is compressing the nerve, it's probably for some other reason like head trauma or a car accident or dental work. Or something for no reason.

may I ask whether your pain was bilateral or just on one side of your face? My doctors keeps telling me that burning ATN pain on both sides is an indicator that an MVD will not help
on one side i had both burning and shocks the success rate for tn burning is less but i felt i needed o do it anyways i was already in so much pain when dr casey went in he found 2 compressions that were flattening my nerve and one vessel that looked as if it was headed towards the nerve so he padded them all when he pulled the vessels off the nerve the nerve became flattened
