My mum is still in pain. She’s already at 1200 mg Tegretol. What is usually done after reaching the maximum dose of 1200 mg Tegretol? Can she add lyrica or gabapentin? She just had a rhizotomy? I emailed her doctor but he still hasn’t replied.
I hope you got a response from the doctor. I am pretty sure he can prescribe above 1200 mg even though that is the "normal" maximum. If not, there are other medications to add on.

First, everyone’s max dose of Tegretol is different, it’s really based on your blood work and/ or your tolerance to side effects. My max dose is 1600mg.
That being said, some of the other meds usually prescribed in addition to Tegretol are Neurontin ( gabapentin), Baclofen, or Dilantin. There are others but each doctor is different.
Blood work for Tegretol should be done at least every 3 months as a rule. ( these times can vary as well)
I would call doctor again and stress that your mom is in a pain crisis and that you need a reply ASAP.

I don't know if its something you can do, ..... what we do is call the nurse - who will get thru to the doctor.
Can you get lidocaine over the counter or with prescription from her regular doctor?
Lidocaine mouthwash for inside
Lidocaine Nose spray or ear drops
Lidocaine face patches
Can help take the edge off some pain.
