So, my neurologist called last week to tell me that my WBC count had fallen below normal - probably a result of the 400mg Tegretol which I was on for less than two weeks - I was sort of relieved as my Neuro was a bit surprised that I had so many side effects tso quickly and this lab test vindicated me - lol!!
Hopefully it is on the rise - as a weakened immune system is no joke!

When I was first prescribed Tegretol in October I was given a blood test and told everything was fine.
Last month when I visited the Oral Surgery Unit the Consultant looked at my paperwork and said my blood levels were fine. When I mentioned that the blood test was taken three months earlier he just repeated himself and moved on.
I’m glad you posted this question as I’m not too sure how often blood levels need to be checked. My dentist was quite surprised that I haven’t had more checks but didn’t suggest I go and have it done.
Tegretol affects everyone differently. One person taking 200mg can operate quite normally while another will be asleep all day.

I do believe the blood levels are supposed to be checked fairly often - weekly during first couple of months and then less often (unless they change the dosage, I imagine!)
I would get them checked if I were you, as I had no idea that my WBC count was out of kilter! I just thought I was getting hit hard by the side effects - which i was - but the two seem interconnected, if you get my drift!!
