A doctor friend of mine urged me to get off Tegretol. He says it can cause pernicious anemia. Anybody heard of this? I was taking 600mg a day, but now I have reduced it to 100mg a day.
PLEASE call you pharmacist - unless your friends is one. LOL there are hundreds and hundreds of people here on it.
Most people don't think to ask their pharmacist -- they go to school for yearrrrs to learn the meds, side effects, etc.....!
And around here - everybody is a little loopy to do this -- so call your pharmacist!
Let us know what you find out! : )
You should really speak with your pharamist and doc about this. There is blood work needed for these medications and some many vary on type and frequency, this also may depend on other health issues you may have. It is also important to lower and raise your medication dosages. I would suggest you look up some information that is factual such as the governments infromtion on it or the manufacturers info for it. This way you can have some knowledge on it and if you have other questions you’ll be able to ask them. This isn’t to say hey your friends wrong it’s just everyone has different ideas on medications and well sometimes you need to weight the risks verse the possible benifits for a medication.
Maybe well get lucky and Red might be his pennies in on this thought. Sorry this wasn’t more helpful but please do be careful when decearsing and increasing medication dosages some also must be done slowly and under a doctors supervision.
Hope you have agreat day that is pain free
I appreciate your input, Kari. I am going to see my doc today about lowering the dose. Tom

I have been on Tegretol for 11yrs, taking a dose of 1400mg until recently, I'm now on 1000mg with other medication. Tegretol can affect blood levels- it can lower white cell count, increase iron levels in the blood and can affect liver function. It can interfere with birth control pills & implants. It is important to have bloods and liver function checked 6 to 12 monthly depending on dose. I have my bloods checked 6 monthly and have had no problems with my blood levels. Grapefruit & grapefruit juice interfere with the absorption of tegretol. Tegretol should be reduce slowly when TN pain eases & increased slowly when pain flares up. I hope this helps.
I am a pharmacist … Tegretol is a hepatotoxic upon long term use also it can cause Agranulocytosis, Aplastic anemia, Bone marrow depression, Eosinophilia, Leukopenia, Pancytopenia, Thrombocytopenia, that mean it suppress all blood content production… Unfortunatlly if medication have no side effect it has no effect ! This is the truth we have no choice, and comapring risk with benefits (relieve pain) you have to take it… But if you are in a remission try to give your body a rest stop it gradually by decrease the dose do not abrupt tegretol suddenly it can cause seizure, also monitor your blood lab test routinly CBC … I hope we all get free of this stupid pain …
I would like to know what some of the causes of TN are. I know I have heard of folks that have had dental work done, which has been a cause. My husband had a severe snowmobile accident, where the snowmobile landed on his left side of his face. Severe nerve damage. He was only 36, now 54...the years have been tough.
What has been your causes?
