Has anyone had relief from TN or ATN pain after seeing an Upper Cervical Chiropractor?James Tomas reports that after 10 years of pain from TN,specific correction of C1 and C2 area completely relieved his pain. There is only 1 chiropractor in the area where I live that does this.Does anyone have any information about this or ever tried this?
Sabrina-
I have done chiropractic for ATN in 2008 (right before I was diagnosed). I went for almost 6 months. It would help for 2-3 hours and then the pain would come back. Ironically, one of the reasons I ended getting an MRI was because the chiropractor I was seeing was concerned that the work he was doing was not helping and that i was getting worse.
Big However- I am not too sure what type of adjustments and to what vertabrae. I will find out and message you the specifics if it is applicable to the question/discussion topic you posted. Hopefully, he did nothing like what you’re asking about and you will get some relief from going down that path. Everyone has different physiology (which you know, being an RN) so, I believe, that what works for one person, may not work for another. Take care! Jo
I tried UCC 4 years ago. It did nothing to the pain at first, but then caused the pain to flare up so bad that I had to stop treatment and tried meds and other bocks etc to get the pain to calm down. It did not so that is when I ended up having my 4th MVD.
Always remember, everyones body is different. It could also have been a coincidence that the pain flared up for me. Do research on who you go to. I called a variety of UCC in my area and after conversations I decided to go with one that had treated someone with TN. My sister (who does not have TN, but does get migraines/sinus problems) did it for about 6 weeks, 2 X a week and it really helped for probably almost 2 years!!
Stay strong.
I was at a class reunion this summer and was telling an old classmate about having TN. It turns out that her teenage son was diagnosed with TN a few years ago. They tried everything then went to a chiropractor who specialized in upper cervical. It took awhile but he cured her son. No more pain. I do not know who the chiropractor was but she lives in Lexington, KY. I have tried to find one around here with no luck.
Hi Pat. After reading your post I am feeling as if I should give this a shot if I can find a practioner in my area (I may have seen a chiropractor where I live who does do this work- still need to find out). I have a question regarding the cause of TN in the 3 cases you mentioned. Were those 3 people suffering from nerve compression related to a blood vessel contacting the nerve? I ask this as that is my case. Thanks for this post, it gives me more to look into and I am not too sure if the chiropractic work I had done included this type of treatment. Thanks. Johanna

Hi Sabrina,
I know of 3 people who have done upper cervical and consider themselves cured of TN as a result. In all 3 cases they have been pain free for a number of years. Currently I am working with an upper cervical chiropractor in the hopes that it might help me with the nerve damage/AD pain caused from my failed MVD in January.
Let me know if you would like the number of my practitioner, she is the President of Upper Cervical Assoc. and I’m sure could provide you with a referal if there is one in your area. You can e-mail me at: pakerberg@verizon.net if you’d like. Hind sight being 20/20 and knowing what I know now, I would have tried upper cervical first before I ever considered surgery and given it a chance. The atlas has a direct link to the spinal column and potential pressure on the trigeminal nerve depending on one’s misalignment. It certainly cannot hurt to give it a try and it doesn’t hold any risk - unlike those that surgery does. My best,
Pat
I am new to this site but wanted to share. I have MS and TN which were diagnosed 12 yrs ago but had the TN unknowlingly for 10 yrs prior to that. Tried every kind of doctor and dentist but no relief. I had a bridge put in 3 mos. before pain started in my lower left jaw just under the bridge. Pain came and went and drove my dentist crazy as I was sure it was that bridge and the metal in my mouth. He finally almost told me it was my age{meniposal). Finally 10 yrs later, med. dr. did MRI to rule out tumor. Showed MS and then they said TN. Wanted to put me on meds but I am not a med-type person and did a lot of research. Finally started on Shaklee vitamins, lots of B complex and somehow, not even sure how, found the only NUCCA chirpractor in South Dakota, about a 100 miles from my house and started with him. Unbelievable results. Started me 2x week, then 1 x week for a mon. then once a month, then every 3 mos. After 1st mo. had very little pain. After 3 mos. hardly a twitch. Treated less and less and last treatment was 2007. Husband had neck problems so he started with him and since this doctor doesn’t participate, I quit treating myself because I was feeling fine. Until about a month ago. Just went back for a treatment last week. Pain level dropped about half so hoping to go back in a couple weeks for another as I know it will take a few treatments before my neck stays in place. I cannot say enough good about this type of chiropractic treatment. Other chiropractic treatments did me no good. One other note, when I went last week, dr. said he had a man who had struggled for years with this and was planning his suicide when someone (I believe it was God) recommended Upper Cervical (NUCCA) treatments. Dr. gave me a copy of his book WHAT TIME TUESDAY by James Tomasi (website of same name, Whattimetuesday.com). What a story. Prayers for all pain to be gone to all of you. Barb
I just wanted to add a note about how to find a Upper Cervical (NUCCA) chiro in your area, just go to www.nucca.org
and put in your state. Our state only has one but other states have many. Blessings Barb
Hi folks,
I went for UCC for a while, and while it did nothing to help my neuralgia,(secondary GPN)strangely enough it sorted out a number of other issues I was experiencing, my knees had been giving out, I was having awful tingling in my arms ( which I had blamed on the teg) and my period pain had been getting out of control, none of these things were mentioned to my practitioner, and following my visits to him they were all gone!
I wouldn’t have believed it especially not for the period pain, and while the neuralgia remained I can not thank him enough for curing the other issues. ( he did some work on my lower back too ) Apparently I was totally misaligned and he has made my life much easier, anything that helped the period pain was a God send.
Just a thought to add into the mix.
Grace I was just wondering because I see a lot of upper cervical mentioned but not sure if this is the same type of treatments that I received. My doctor first took xrays down the back of my head and then from side and measured showing my head was tilted I believe about 8 degrees. He worked up his measurements and then gave me a treatment and re-xrayed. I was totally amazed how straight my head sat. I felt like had grown inches. Is this the same type of treatment that you received? He told me that NUCCA chiropractic is all done with measurements.
Thanks Pat. It did correct it for quite a while but came back about a month ago. I first started treating in 2000 when this measurement was done but do remember him talking about 8deg. I know that what works for one may not work for others but for me I believe this was a Godsend. Would love to hear from others with what has really helped them for a long period of time, or maybe alleviated the monster. I do not have any other problems with my MS and have never treated for it since I was diagnosed 12 years ago. I still think that this problem started with a lot of dental work I had done 3 mos prior to first attack when I had a bridge put in left side and all bottom back teeth crowned. Prior to that, I had quite a few mercury fillings which are still there with crowns over the top. Went to a dentist to see about having them removed but with crowns, no one wants to touch them. But found out a couple of mos. ago my niece is diag. with MS with TN so my therory with dental work must be wrong.
For me, there were no x-rays conducted or anything of the sort, he took a lot of measurements, and did a lot of work at the top of my neck and head, and in later sessions dealt with my lower back and got me “re-aligned” and like I say although it did not a thing for the neuralgia it was a god send for sorting the PMT, so well worth it for that alone, and if it comes back I will be signing up to visit him again.
Sorry I can’t be more specific about it, with measurements etc.
Hope this helps . x x x

Hi Barbara,
My mom recently began having TN pain and my brother recommended an upper cervical chiro right away. He has been using the orthogonal technique (AO) with the radio wave that Pat described. When you say that you saw your chiro 2x week and then less and less did he actually manipulate you each time? My started out a few times a week but he doesn't manipulate her everytime...just checks the alignment. Due to muscle memory do you think he should be manipulating her each time?

Ashley, He did measure me and if it has slipped out, he would adjust me again. I went from twice weekly (One or two weeks, cant remember, it has been so long ago) then one time week for short period and progressed and held treatment longer and longer. I think after a couple months, I was going once month, and then went to once every 3 mos. for a long time. As I stated, I went about 3 years and didnt go but started back last year after pain started coming back. I can tell you that I had a treatment just before Christmas as we were going to Florida for 3 mos and I was concerned about being away from my doctor (he did give me names of drs in Florida if needed) but both my husband and I did make it thru the 3 mos. As we were coming home from Florida, since we were going past the city where he was, we both got a treatment before coming home. My husband has neck and back problems and we both swear by NUCCA. I pray that your mom gets the treatment she needs from this doctor. I will tell you I live pain-free most of the time, usually even forget about it, until those shocks start again and I know I need a treatment. I do try and get a treatment about every 3 mos, even if I don’'t have pain. I always seem to be about a 1/4 inch off.

I had severe (in my opinion) for two years. Taking meds and just getting by. I put my back out and had to go to a Chiropractor who cured my TN. His name is Dr Harrison Prator and is in Orlando Florida. Make sure you use a no force method and not somebody that is going to click and crack your back. It felt like a miracle. I no longer take meds and no longer have face pain.
