hey guys. so i won't bore you with too much detail but a couple of years ago i had a dull pain start in my jaw that got more and more severe over months until it turned into severe clamping pain and electrical pain all over my right face and back of head on right side. at it's peak for weeks i was just curled in a corner. it slowly left in the same way it came on, subsiding slowly over months until it went away 100%. in the year after that i developed other neurological problems and was given scans for MS but they could find no causes for my problems.
one thing i never had with my neuralgia was a trigger point.
today for the first time in months i had al my old symptoms on a moderate scale along with a dull ache in my right ear area and some headaches all day. it didn't concern me too much but one thing has, if i touch one very particular hair on my chin it sends a dull moderately severe pain right from the point of the hair up through the entire trigeminal nerve on right side of my face into the back of my head. is this something i should be concerned about and should i see me GP?
Well, yes if you haven't seen one lately. There are a number of drugs that can be very helpful for controlling pain. As to the trigger part, TN is a tricky bastard. If I touch a certain tooth, I'll have pain in my lip. So I'm guessing there are all sorts of weirdness stories out there. If you quit touching that hair, I'll quit touching my tooth;~)
ok, thanks. so does anyone have it where just one specific hair triggers the pain? it's new to me as when i had some years ago it was just a constant pain
One hair doesn’t trigger my pain. However, blow drying my hair often triggers a flare for a day or two. I think it is excessive movement plus vibration.
I too would like to know about various triggers. For example, driving in the car for more than thirty minutes is one for me.
i'm really hoping it's nothing :) i was so sure i was rid of this after being free for 2 years. the pain is so mild right now, and only comes and goes or if i touch the hair. but before was the same, came slowly, very slowly
I will join in here with the oddities of this infliction. I have a certain spot on my chin that sends my cheek and jaw pain on my left side off. So strange I've never mentioned it to anyone.
I never thought I had any specific physical triggers with my ATN but as time marches on and I get to know my types of pain, locations and patterns I notice that I do have triggers.
Wind, cold air, barometric pressure, my cycle, this spot on my chin and sometimes talking.
We are all very different. I hope that your pain dissipates for you. One thing I have learnt about TN is to not ignore it. Take all of the steps to get help, testing, see specialists and explore treatment options. These things all take time and I would rather do it while my pain is under control and I can think straight then wait until I am running to the ER.
You don't need to see your GP except to possibly recommend a good neurologist.Have you had a MRI with contrast?Seriously,a GP unless he's specifically experienced with TN isn't going to fix your problem. That's My opinion. My own GP was experienced and still recommended a brain/spine surgeon for MVD surgery. It turned out i couldn't do it because a AVM was what was causing the problem by pressing the Trigeminol nerve. The contrast MRI showed this up.Good Luck.
