Toothache or Neuro - Please Help

Thank you. I was hoping to have good news but so far I’m not out of the woods. My bite went off and they adjusted it and after that the pain stared up again and worse and worse. It’s in the tooth next to where the extraction is.

So it looks like I’m going to have another one removed. Hopefully he’ll do it. All the Endodontics I’ve seen have mentioned that it does look questionable. It has been crowded for 20 years too.

I was so excited. I thought I had finally lucked out. I was pain free for a few weeks and it was wonderful, as I’m sure many can relate too. Now I’m back to square one. With having young children I’m just so worried. :frowning:

It is controlled by Tylenol still and my dentist says he doesn’t think it’s ATN (he not only knows what it is but has seen a few people with it).

Anyways wish me luck! I’ll post once I have more information.

If tylenol is doing the trick-then maybe taking out the iffy tooth will do it.
Good luck

As we all say, obviously I’m not a doctor… laughter … with that in mind, have you been checked for jaw bone issues? maybe an infection of the bone? or, god forbid, cancer of the jaw bone? or gum disease? or heart disease (since doesn’t heart disease impact your teeth)? based on your story you seem to having many repeat problems within your teeth, one gets cleared up but then it starts all over again in another one – so frustrating – but it does make me start to think you’re missing an underlying issue of some sort. it seems like you’re hearing hoof beats and have ruled out horses, it’s time to start looking zebras.

Thanks for your help and emails. I really appreciate it. Since so many of you have asked, here is an update: (Thanks again

The tooth next to was bad. It flared up and I was in a lot of pain. The root canal solved the problem but not for long. It started to abscess. You could see it on the X-ray/CAT scan. So now at least they have a good view of everything. The new dentist seems to be pretty smart and has a lot of technology. I didn’t know they could do a CAT scan right in the office. He tested me extensively and said he didn’t see any other issues. The exam was about as long as a Neuro exam. Actually I think it was longer.

So I’m continuing to wait and see how it heals. I’ll keep you posted once I know. Right now it’s still sore from the extraction.

Fingers crossed for you.

Hi Niki, just wanted to add if helps for the in-between, even a little of course check with doctor is best but I’ve read the counter is “Orajel” paste thry have PM, severe tooth & gum ache and many others made for adults (kids version is for teething & lower dose active ingredients) they are in toothbrush section near dental floss usually in a small tube and a toothpick version fir in the go. The toothpick has ointment is in the toothpick you break one marked end and apply directly for temporary but decent numbing the aching tooth/gum area. Just a tip/trick. I have used this as recommend by doctors to apply on my mouth guard for my soft palate to alleviate spasams for my birth defect & repairs. My Maxio-facial surgeon also found benadryl has a topical numbing effect & helped my mouth sores/pain. It doesn’t last very long but swish and not swallowing does give relief. Again I recommend asking doctor or nurse but it is made for toothaches and gums gentle & works. Ice chips can hurt sometimes being too cold but also option but these Orajel cream/pastes numb longer and their is a good selection most stores. I do hope you felt better and you are in our thoughts for recovery and healing.

Thank you so much. I have been using them and they do help some. I think I’ll be able to use them more as the site is healing now. I really appreciate your help and I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner!

It’s been 3 weeks. I think I had a dry socket, as the pain got very bad on the 4th day but improved. I thought I was on the road to recovery but then the pain started up again. The dentist doesn’t know what’s wrong and there’s no more teeth in that area. He said it did look irritated but did not give me antibiotics as I didn’t have an infection. He took a lot of X-Rays.

So I’m just waiting and scared. I’m sure you all know the drill. :frowning:

I see another dentist in the same practice in a few days so we’ll see what he says. It’s only been three weeks so I think it’s too soon to diagnose anything at this point.

Thanks for your continued support

Saw another dentist. He too can find nothing wrong. It’s looking like it is some type of face pain. It’s a constant, deep ache. It mostly goes away with 2 Advil so it’s not horrible but it’s a moderate pain. I’m really scared it’s going to get worse. Sometimes there’s a mild burning. I can’t really pinpoint where it’s coming from. It seems to move too but I’m not sure.

I am on steroids and following up in two weeks. They might be sending me to a specialist for dental face pain but said they’ve never had to send someone there. They are going to call this specialist and get back to me I think.

So it’s either an infection that they can’t see, another tooth which seems unlikely, or Type 2 Neuralgia. Or something else?

I’ll keep you all posted. Thank you so much for your kind messages. It’s a great place here. I’m hoping my story can help others.

Well now I have been officially diagnosed with neuralgia.

Seeing a neurologist on Monday.

I suppose you saw it coming but I really was hoping it was dental related.

It seems like it’s TN2. It’s an ache on one side that is constant but moves. No shocks or sensitivity to touch.

Hopefully they can give me something to help with the pain. I think I am still in shock!

Get rid of the tightness in your neck, relax, tell the aggravating boss/ family member to do one, breath, drink more water, drink less alcohol, eat more fruit/ veg. If you haven’t Mri, to rule out nastys.

possibly wide of the mark, but …
