was wondering if anyone else has problems with the anti-seisure medicine. ive been on alot of them and it seems to mutiply the pain. my doctor doesnt understand this but it really just intesifys my pain after about 2 or 3 days on it. im now on lyrica but the same thing happened plus i had an allergic reaction to it. my face swelled up and now ive not been able to even talk or eat or drink for 2 days now.
Suggest you do some reading in the medications section of our Face Pain Info tab on the menu above, Pamela. It's common enough for people not to get relief from individual anti-seizure meds, but to be aided by others. But a reaction such as you describe is unusual in the reading and correspondence I've had with thousands of patients. You might be hypersensitive to this class of meds. Medication allergy, however, is a difficult subject to write about authoritatively. Id much prefer that you talk with a licensed doctor concerning your specific allergic susceptibilities.

Pamela, I certainly hope you have talked with a physician about your side effects. I'm curious, what strength and what is the frequency of your taking the Lyrica? I see you are in Indianapolis--must be some good resources there?
she started me out on 150 a day and then after a week it was suppose to go up to 300 a day but i didnt make it that far. so far, i havent had much luck with any of my new doctors. ive had to switch insurance and its been a nightmare.
Thanks for your reply. We have much to learn from one another's experiences. I am currently on 150mg a day of Lyrica and I am still having "events". I am not happy, but am glad I am not having such serious side effects as you are having. I hope you have talked with your doctor about this by the time you read this. Please take care of yourself. You are in my thoughts.

Hi Pamela, Iv not long been on Lyrica, I too for the first week have to take 150mg a day, tomorrow I upgrade to 150mg in the morning and 75mg in the evening. Then the following week 300mg morning and night. I too have noticed an increase in the pain and have also been having the shocks on the opposite side of my head which is most unusual. I have an appointment to see my doctor in 2weeks time to discuss how I am getting on with this. I am going to persevere with this as have tried many different medications all without success in getting rid of or decreasing the pain. Hope that you find a solution soon.
Debs.
I took Topamax, which I felt increased my pain. I think what was really happening is that the side effects of Topamax caused me to clench more, and other behavior, which made my pain worse. So it wasn't the drug itself causing the pain, but the physical behavior I was unknowingly doing is what caused the extra pain. Who knows...
thanks, i never thought of that.
Pamela, I had the same reaction with both Lyrica and Neurontin - severe pain throughout my body after a few days of being on the medications. I was told it may be a hypersensitivity to something in the class of mediction but wouldn't be considered an allerigic reaction. I am now taking tegretol and besides the loopy feeling I have had no reactions like before. Hope you can find somthing you can tolerate that will relieve pain and not create more.
Stephanie
thanks for your response. i knew i wasnt crazy when i was dealing with the lyrica although the neurologist kept telling me that the lyrica doesnt respond that way. im a still and will always keep looking for ways to help myself.
I am only on 100mg of Lyrica a day, I confirmed with Neurosurgeon yesterday that all the anti-seizure meds are useless to me, they work for two weeks, cause me to be dizzy and loopy and then the pain comes back. I also have a very weird reaction to them in that I get spasms in both my legs that are almost as painful as the TN. It gets to the point I cant walk or sleep, so then I have to skip the meds for a day. I have had weird reactions to meds my whole life, so this is nothing new to me, but as for you, no you are not crazy, drugs can help, but they can also have side effects that make you rethink treatment.
