Anyone else have atypical TN and now (later) get some TMJ Disorder symptoms? I got the ATN on the right side after bad / crazy dental work. It took a year of level 10 pain and many meds to get that pain half way under control. I went on a diet and chewed gum. OOps. Next thing I know, I have a sore jaw and on and off clicking on left side. Muscle relaxers seem to help. Any others?
Hi Nomad,
what you wrote there sounds fairly familiar to me. I developed TMJ/shifted jaw after months of living with ATN. Just yesterday an enlightened dentist explained to me that body reacts to pain by contracting muscles around the sore spot. When the pain is acute and correctly treated then the damage is little but with chronic pain the muscles may stay contracted and - this bit I find interesting - eventually the bone gives way to the muscle tissue. My TMJ is usually as bad as my ATN is, and my pain has shot up recently due to the crazy weather over Central Europe. I take Tramadol/Paracetamol combo when the pain is bad and I find it decreases the inflammation enabling my muscles to relax. I also react well to antibiotics but I can't keep on taking them. I'm booked for a consult with a maxillofacial surgeon next month to see if a corrective surgery could solve my shifted jaw problem but now the dentist I saw yesterday doubts it and she made me think this may not be the way to go.
Hope you'll be able to resolve your TMJ, I know there are quite a few people with ATN suffering from it.
