I take 600 mg a day [200 mg 3 x a day]. Just recently I noticed that my memory hasn't been very good and my speech has been horrible. I'll forget a word, can't remember what the word was, or feel like I'm slurring my speech. It doesn't sedate me, but the medicine puts me in such a deep sleep that it's hard to wake me up. I've also been having really bad headaches and I'm not sure if it's related to this medication because my neuro only told me about the sedation, dizziness, and possible stomach aches.
Has anyone else experienced this at all? It makes me feel stupid.
I had to come off Tegretol as it didn’t agree with me. If you feel it’s not for you, change. You’ll feel better for it I’m on Amitriptyline and tramadol now.
Taylor, poor memory and word retrieval difficulties are common side effects for many who take Tegretol and indeed some of the other TM meds. We have to weigh the side effects and pain and find a balance sometimes. Sorry.
yep, im on 1200mg a day and i feel this..even after the blurred speech dizzyness and walking into things lessened..i feel very stupid all the time. I forget things..anything..i forget things i just did, i forget what im saying it as im saying it, i replace words in a sentence accidentally for example, 'can i have another kitchen', instead of can i have another glass!! Im off work at the moment and feel i cant return on tegretol as my hand eye co ordination is not the same, and i feel like i have forgotten how to do my trade!!! Not all people will always have side effects but for those of us who do, its not uncommon. As for the feelings stupid thing and finding it hard to concentrate etc, i have read many online sources that say all will return to normal a while after the tegretol is out of the sytem, if you choose to stopit. Apologies for the weird sentence structure and other issues in my message..i actually blame tegretol, i honestly do!! :)
Unfortunately, these are the side affects of tegretol. I think I have had just about every one of them you have mentioned. However, some of the side affects have gotten better for me. The slurred speech as gotten some what better, but, since my MVD surgery I am only taking 200 mg of tegretol instead of the 1200 I once had to take. I did have the bad headaches in the morning and occasionally get them now. They would feel like pressure headaches, and , when I would get up they would slowly go away. I would have problems with names such as James and John, not sure why, but, occasionally I still do. The memory loss is still there and my memory concentration is horrible. I have to write down just about everything. But, it is like Jackie said, unfortunately we have to weigh the side effects and pain and find a balance, So sorry. I would say it was better for me to have surgery then have to take so much tegretol and there are also other procedures that will help as well.
