Tegratol nearing the end of its effectiveness

Hi all,

It appears my Tegratol is nearing the end of controling the pain. I am at 1500mg's a day and my neurologist doesn't want me to increase it anymore. So yesterday, he wrote me a script for Baclofen to add to the mix. Anybody have any experience with it...and it worked? So far for me...no. I do realize I just started taking it yesterday and maybe it takes awhile, but I thought I would ask. I'm wondering why not add neurotin instead? (going to ask today)

I have noticed in the past 2 weeks when I do some pretty good physical work, the next day I seem to have a flare up of pain. Is it a coincidence in timing that tegratol has run it's course, or is there a correlation here? Has anyone else experienced any greater pain effects after doing pyhsical work?

Thank god the 21st is near for surgery!

Thanks

My neuro prescribed Baclofen for me when my meds were not fully effective. She said it would aid the medication working. You are at the top range of Carbamazepine and your Dr is right not to prescribe more I think, as it can be hard to cope with. I have no knowledge about combining Carbamazepine and Neurontin.

If you add Neurontin to the mix, it's likely your neurologist will want to scale back on the Tegretol. As Jackie notes, Baclofen is regarded by many physicians as more of a "booster" to one of the big three anti-seizure agents (Tegretol, Trileptal or Neurontin), than as a primary medication of choice.

I think physical activity tends to aggravate breakthru pain.. I usually end up having to take an oxycodone anyway so before I cut the grass.. I take one anyway...Keep in mind this in on a hill not flat grass cutting!!

Hi, I have been stable on 800 mg for 2 yrs now and this past month I started having more intense breakthrough pain but on the other side of my face, finally last week saw neuro and am increasing Tegretol. 1200 didn’t touch it so now were upping the dose in 4 day increments so today is day 1 of 1400mg! Ugh, slightly dizzy and nauseous but hopeful this is as high a I need to go.
My neuro said he would increase me to maximum 1800 mg, and if that doesn’t work then we’ll look at adding another med to the mix. Of course all of this depends on how I feel (side effects etc)
Were also doing another MRI
I have heard of many people who take. Combination of meds to maintain a pain free existence.
Good luck, not fun, I know.
Mimi

Thank you all for your thoughts. It's a tough fight.

Bob

Hi Jackie, i'm on 600 mg of Tegretol CR per day, with little if no side effects. It has completely eliminated the pain for 8 weeks but now i feel it is becoming less effective. I do have a strategy of upping to 800 mg on days when it breaks through and then trying to slip back to a baseline of 600 mg. I'm surprised to be developing tolerance so fast. Any hints or tips would be appreciated

Hey bob, There are times when hard work or just some decent exercise caused the pain to flare up, stress also. To me the connection is blood pressure.. but thats just my thought.

feel better
