Has anyone had mvd surgery for type 2 trigem? The constant pain and the constant merry go round of medications is driving me crazy. I have seen a surgeon at the Unn Of Penn and he said just that you will be on a constant merry go round of meds, and he has been right. I am currently on 1800 of gab....(neurontin) and 200 of tegretol not really doing much for the constant pain, but has cut down on the stabbing pain and headaches.
I have both TN1 and TN2, bilaterally. I had MVD on the right side in January. I helped with the shocks, but the constant burning boring pain remained. I have had this for ten years ( undiagnosed) so that contributed to the outcome. I had a PNS implanted in August, which has done wonders for managing the pain.
I developed TN1 and TN 2 pn my left in October 2012. I had MVD October 14 of this year, and so far both the burning boring and shocks have been quiet. I am from 2400 mg to 1200mg of neurontin, and will keep reducing.
Best of luck to you!
Hi Wendyjo,
I, like Christine have TN1 and TN2 bilaterally.
I had an MVD this past April 2013 for my predominantly TN2 side which had become med resistant. ( refractory)
My MVD was successful in that I was pain free for several months but could only reduce my meds from 3 to one . So it didn’t take my TN away completely BUT it definitely was better than 24/7 high pain levels…
My pain has worsened since end if August and I just recently had to add a second med, BUT it is still better than pre-MVD. At least now I do get pain free days!
Everyone’s response to MVD is different as there are many factors involved.
I have had TN since 2002 so I kind of knew MVD would not take my TN pain away completely but of course you have to go in hopeful and pray for the best possible outcome.
I have no regrets and personally wouldn’t hesitate to do it again on my other side if needed.
Based on studies type 2 has a lower success rate BUT it can still be successful.
I took a chance…no compressions ever showed on MRI ever…and three were found during my MVD.
Consult with several experienced neurosurgeons before making a decision.
(( hugs )) Mimi
