I have TN 1 and TN 2 , I met with a neurosurgeon who says he can get rid of both ! I am concerned because my neurologist told me it would not and so did another neurosurgeon! Really confused ??
Hi Annie
I have bilater ATN, with both the shocks, and the burning boring pain of TN2. My right side had been affected ( undiagnosed) for close to 10 years before I had MVD. While the procedures relieved the shocks, the chronic burning boring pain remained. My surgeon attributed this to the length of time the nerve had been compressed . I had a PNS implanted on the right side to control this pain 7 months after the MVD.
My left side was only affected for one year when I had the MVDS on that side. This time, the surgery was successful in stopping both the shocks, AND the burning boring pain of TN2. I had all of my surgeries in 2013, and am now pain free on my left side. As I have the implant on the right, that pain is completely managed, and I no longer take any medication.
please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
Best of luck!
If a doctor deals in absolutes I would be wary. No one knows if it absolutely will get rid of both, or one or none. This is not an exact science.
Thank you both for replying and yes I had a Doctor say he could get rid of both and yes I am concerned he is the only one telling me this ! Any advice from here !
I have not had a MVD. This is coming as an attorney. I would absolutely steer from someone that is promising something. Nothing with this disease is guaranteed. He certainly can’t guarantee the TN2 goes away because sometimes that pain’s cause can be unknown.
Maybe it’s not the same with medicine. But if an attorney promises someone an outcome it is generally a very bad thing.
I have often heard and read to ask the surgeon how many procedures he has performed.I havent had an MVD so am not experienced in the op. Im sure it said in Striking back to ask the doc/surgeon the above question.

I have read that surgery will not help TN2. I had MVD surgery 24 years ago and I was pain free for 20 years. Last year I had MVD surgery again and this time it did not help. I have had pain still to this day. I am wondering if now I have TN2. Tomorrow I go to a new neurologist that specializes in TN. I hope she can tell me more. I had my surgery last year in 2014 for no reason at all. And the MVD surgery is not fun. So be sure it will help you before you have it done.
I had an MVD six months ago. It helped the I, not the II. it seems the II has significantly decreased though.
I have TN on both sides though, andwas going to do other side in Dec. , but surgeon didn’t recommend that at the time, cuz, I hadn’t had enough episodes of I pain at that time yet. He explained that the MVD will only help with I pain.
Unfortunately, I’ve had lots of episodes since…

Hmm
I can only tell you my personal experience and what I have learned through medical journals. I think it can, I had MVD surgery and it resolved both issues until recently. A year and a half latter, I started feeling some minor to moderate TN2 pain but nothing like before. Today, it is manageable with Tegrital. In short, my surgery was about 85 % curative and the experience changed my life for the better...
