I have been proscribed oxcarbazepine. I was on Tegrotel but suffered dreadful side effects. I was then given Lyrica, which didn't seem to work at all for me. I have now been given the oxcarbazepine and feel really nervous and agitated all the time. I haven't been able to eat today because my tummy is in knots. It feels like my fight or flight response is in place. Has anyone else had this problem with this medication? I also feel very itchy.
I’ve had that response to other medications and it is just awful. I haven’t been on your current medication before though. How long have you been taking it?
I think tegretol is a cousin of the current med -- I would not hesitate to call pharmacist and ask about side effects - do they go away, or should you stop the med now.....
If the side effects of this are the same ones or similar to the tegretol ones - there is your answer.
I am on Oxcarbazepine as well. It's the generic for Trileptal according to my doctor. It's pretty ugly in the beginning. I hope your doc started you off on a light dose and then increased that dosage over time. I started at 150mg twice a day and got up way too high just recently. I have since leveled back down to 1200mg per day. It makes me very dizzy and also agitated. I was driving to my son's basketball game when I first restarted it and had to pull over and let my wife drive because I felt like I was going to pass out. I'm not nervous from it but I am very anxious due to the TN, I think. Total frustration with this. I will tell you that Oxcarb made the pain go away for about five years, however it has returned in the last month. I got back on the Oxcarb and it has helped again, but I still have major pain. I'm still praying it will work again soon. I'm hoping that your system will soon tolerate the drug and the side effects will go away. I was dizzy and tired when I first started taking it again, but now my body seems to accept it, although the TN is still here. Stay strong. I will say a prayer for you.
Hi Mike, Thanks very much for your reply. I have stopped taking it and gone back on the LYRICA. After I wrote the above I took another pill and started to itch all over - hives, so I stopped it. The same thing happened with Tegretol so I new it was an Allergic reaction. Don't know why the silly doctor gave them to me when she new I was allergic to Teg! Maybe she's sick of seeing me and tried to kill me off. NOT THIS TIME SUCKER!! Anyway, Thanks again, and I wish you all the very best of health and pain free days xxx
