This is a really new thing for me, and I have barely any clue what is going on. On Sunday when I later down for a nap I experienced these lightening jolts through my face andO had pain in my face from my ear to my eye from my ear through the bottom of my teeth but the worst was my ear to the top if my teeth. This occurred with a mild headache and stomach ache so I thought it could be a migraine and went about taking migraine medicine and called my neurologist and made it in on Monday but as this progressed I was in agony and it was unbearable. I’ve never experienced this kind of pain. I talked to my neurologist about it and we came to the conclusion that it could be TN and we tried a nerve block right then that had very little success an I ended up In the ER that night. I am being sent to my dentist but I have a serious fear of the dentist and I don’t know what happens and to be honest I am just crazy scared and confused… Any prayers or well wishes would really help right now. I can see that this community is really supporting and I am thankful to have this.
Will be praying for you! I am not a Dr, but your symptoms sure sound like TN. This is just my experience, I had 5 teeth pulled because I was desperate for the pain to stop, my dentist should have known better, I had never heard of TN nor thought of going to a neurologist for what I thought was tooth pain! Glad you have a neurologist! May be good to know your teeth are okay, but I would avoid any uneeded procedures. Many Dr's, unfortunately have no clue about TN, did your neurologist suggest trying any meds? It can take some time and a few tries to get the right Dr that can help, but there is help. I am limited as I don't have insurance but have been blessed with a dear Dr that works with me. Hang in there, it is hard, but there is life with TN. Sending you a gentle hug and please let us know how you are doing.
Betsy
Please do not go back to the dentist..... go to the doctors tab above - and find a doctor on here that is good, any neurologist within 100 miles if you can!
That is my personal opinion... if you were my sister, knowing what many of us have been through, this would be my advice
Ask your primary or current neurologist to call the pharmacy ASAP tomorrow!
Tell them to call in for you lidocaine patches for face / and... or
lidocaine mouthwash
until you can be seen by somebody new!
Get the book - Striking Back - by Dr. Ken Casey.
Read, learn, ask, repeat
It can get better if you or somebody can help you research YOUR best treatments.
I went to the dentist today and he seemed to know what I was talking about and he found some decay in my teeth and did half a root canal but I’ve had other dental problems before so I’m not concerned so much of the necessity of that root canal. The worst part is just that even though I’m on different meds for all of this I’m still getting pain! I have this shoulder neck and face pain and what I guess is spasming… I don’t know what to think to be honest and I’m so goofy because of all the meds. My dentist thinks my tooth set off that nerve and wants me to keep coming for the rest of my root canal and such and my neurologist wants me to take the meds she sent in so we are all waiting. My parents are freaked out and don’t want me thinking it’s TN because they think I’m just scaring myself but really I’m listening to my body and my doctor who has been good to me.
& thank you guys so much for these comments! Good to know there’s other people out there who know what I’m going through…
Hope all goes well for you Natasha. Let us know. x
Sorry you are going through all of this. There is hope. KCDancer gave you great advice, everything I would say. What meds did your neuro prescribe for you?
She prescribed me something called oxcarbazepine and I’m taking Vicodin and an antibiotic from my dentist and also verapamil and maxalt for migraines. The nerve block injections were in my face and neck and shoulder and the dentist couldn’t fully numb me. I still experienced some pain and even after taking lots of meds I still experienced pain through my neck and face. All that’s left right now is some face pain and neck pain but I’m on lots of meds so I can’t fully tell what I can attribute the way I feel to…
My prayers are with you! TN is so hard at first because no one knows what is going on and nothing helps the pain. I remember asking the doctor in the ER why they couldn't give me some medicine to help. I did not understand at the time that (in some cases) there is nothing to help! Just take comfort in the fact that the outbursts of pain usually subside at least for a while. This site is a great place to come and learn. Everyone here is teaching me so much and I am so thankful for all of you!
Now I’m just experiencing a constant headache and neck pain with some facial pain but not where it was worst hurting into my teeth. I don’t know what to think because none of the like 5 meds I’m on is helping how I feel now.
Yes every six hours & I’m getting it finished on Thursday.
