Really frustrated

I am getting really frustrated, to the point of getting ready to blow my cork. I respect why the comment is made, but I want to offer a different perspective when it comes to picking a neurosurgeon.

I often hear it said go to only to a neurosurgeon that does a lot of MVDS, you will get a better outcome. I have lost count how many people come to LWTN, having gone to well known TN neurosurgeons, and had horrible outcomes. I know one of those well known neurosurgeons is here in my hometown, and he really does not have a good reputation. My neurosurgeon has been with me since he was a fifth year resident, and I refuse to go to anyone else. People think I am crazy for going to a neurosurgeon that ended their residency just 18 months ago. Thing is because he is up on all the latest training, he very willing to think outside of the box where my care has been concerned. The assumption that just because one does a lot of the procedures, you will always have a better outcome is just that. I encourage people to check to see if their perspective neurosurgeon has any malpractice judgments against their medical license. I am also a firm believer in going for a 2nd opinion. I have seen where some neurosurgeons will say whatever they think the patient wants to hear. I am grateful my neurosurgeon only promised me for sure that he would all he could to make sure I would be ok.

You make a very valid point, and share your experience with your neurosurgeon who may not have been as experienced BUT you trusted him.

That’s the point. Don’t just go to a referred neurosurgeon, go out and get opinions and make an informed decision.

I am guilty of telling people to go to experienced with TN/MVD neurosurgeons BUT I always encourage people to see more than one, get a second or even a third opinion.

I find people do more research when buying a car or furniture piece than they do researching their health, procedures or the people who will be performing serious surgery!

My neurosurgeon was extremely experienced but also VERY honest.
I knew he was the one I would choose for my circumstance because I trusted him. Gut feeling, good vibe whatever you want to call it. I didn’t get that same feeling with the other two I consulted with.

Just like when you follow up on references for hiring someone for a job, I too was able to speak to past patients by phone via another TN support board.

A lot of thought, research and follow up should go into choosing a neurosurgeon.

I’ve seen/ read of too many people who make rash decisions out of desperation for procedures and have had very bad experiences / complications as a result.

Thanks saraiderin for sharing your perspective ! We shouldn’t discount the less experienced.
(( hugs )) Mimi

Trust is huge for me.
