Reaction to carbomazepan

hi all. i am quite low at the moment. newly diagnosed and they are trying new medication to try to help me but i also have CFS and i am have meds for that too. anyway i started the carbo last week and got sick on friday - very lightheaded, floaty and dizzy, felt very sick ( i have had this med before and reacted this way) on sunday i projectiled vomited down my hallway, my partner help me undress and put all my clothes in the wash including my phone - aagghhh - then later i drove her home, on the way back i was sick three times whilst driving the car - into a bowl - also had bladder accident. back at home all i could do was retch out of bed. i felt helpless and very unhappy and ill. i stopped the meds and now i am ok but the head pains are back - i pulled a pillow from under my head last night and it started me off - they are now trying gabapentin. so it has really pulled me down and i could just sit and cry

I had really bad reactions to both those meds i had to quit immediately as they just made my pain worse. Sorry your having to go through all that extra sickness. I remember you said you have epilepsy Can you take tricylic anti-depressents they are better for type 2 / neuropathic pain

i was on citalopram but now on seterizine ( think that is the right spelling!)

the first ones a regular anti depressent and the second is a allergy medication?

no the seond one was a replacement antid dep to tackle the anxiety rather than depression as they feel i am highly anxious rather than depressed. i give up!!! just checked it - sertraline

What was the dosage they gave you to start with? You are supposed to start at about 100mg a couple of times a day, then go to 200mg, etc.... If they started you on a high dose that may be why you got so sick.

It sounds awful, I have felt dreadful in the early days of a med, but nothing like this. I hope the Gabapentin helps you soon. Big hugs.

I had issues at first with Carbamazepine. It took almost a month for me to be able to walk straight with no vertigo (puking).

I know what you mean.

What Donna Cook Turnage said is correct, you need to start at a very low dose and slowly raise the dose until it gives you relief. I am at 1200mg a day now and I never have an issue with dizzyness or puking (unless I am stupid and forget a dose)

I really hope you can find something that works for you, everyone is different.

Smash

gah! lost the last reply! i was on it about ten years ago for epilepsy and i reacted the same way and the doctor told me to keep going with it, as you correctly say, to let it get into your system but it never did and they took me off it. so i was dubious about this times attempt but because it was such a violent reaction and my stomac reacts badly to meds - always have - i was unwilling to try it for longer and my current gp agreed. as you said, we are all different but it is soooo frustrating

I'm sorry you are having trouble with the meds.

I was extremely dizzy the first month on Carbamazepine (Tegretol). I was told to start with 200mg and increase it by 200mg every 4 days until I reached 800mg daily. When I reached 800mg I was so dizzy I couldn't stand and I was vomiting constantly for a week. They did blood work that week and told me everything was ok and to try to handle it for a while longer. The vomiting lasted about a week and a half total and then it stopped. I'm not saying that's what others should try, but that was my experience. I am fortunate in that I don't work (no kids either) and I had the option of staying home and not driving the entire time I was trying to adjust. I know everyone's circumstances are not the same.

Oh, I missed something....

I was also given anti-nausea medicine to help me not be so sick while I was adjusting to the medicine. I'm sure that helped me not get as sick as I could have.
