I am going in for a consult with a doc tomorrow to see if he will implant a PNS in the left side of my face. I have a failed MVD and Balloon Compression. My neurosurgeon says this is my best shot at continuous pain relief. Anyone had this done? What is the procedure like?
I have a PNS. In a lot of cases, the doctor first does a trial. This is an out patient procedure. The leads are placed under the skin along the Trigeminal nerve, and attached to external wires that connect to a battery pack. You are given a wireless remote control to change the programs of the stimulator. In my case, the rep from the company that makes the PNS was in the recovery room to turn on the stim and show me how to use it. My trial was on Friday, and as it was successful, I had the permanent the following Wednesday. In the permanent procedure, ( also out patient) new leads are placed, with wires running under the skin and connecting to the implanted battery. My battery is in my chest, just below my collarbone. I have one lead that runs from the battery, behind my ear into my scalp, and one that runs in front of my ear into my cheek. They are not visible at all.
I am very happy I have the PNS. It completely controls my pain! I hope it works out for you. Please ask me any questions you may have, I am happy to help.
