Painful numbness following MVD

Since my MVD in August I have had a painful numbness starting at my right ear and it goes to the top of my head.

Somedays I can even comb my hair.

Its painful to the touch.

Havent spoke with my neurologist about this yet but I certainly need to.

Has anyone ever had a painful numbness following your microvascular decompression.

Wondering if I might have some variant of Anesthesia Dolorosa.

Curious.....

Rick

Rick! I have painful numbness too all around the incision, and left side of my head…not my face. Is it your face too?

No its not on my face

It starts at the top of my head and goes all the way down to half of my right ear

I called my neurosurgeon and they said it might go away or it might not

they said my surgery was only 3 months old so just give it some time

not really the answer I wanted to hear

Hi again,
If the numbness doesn’t include you face, tongue, lips, etc. and isn’t painful like mine is, that may be a positive sign. It could subside in time - unlike that of anesthesia dolorosa or trigeminal deafferentation. I think it’s not unusual at all for the surgical site to have some numbness. Don’t give up hope that you could still improve.

Hi, Rick
I am so sorry to hear this. I had MVD surgery this last August and I have some numbness also. My numbness is in my right side which is the side my TN and surgery was on. It isn’t painful though. It is usually my tongue, lips, and side of my face that are numb. I also have the tingling feeling when I lay my head down. I was told by my Dr. that the incision would take time to heal , at least a year. I feel the incision area quite a bit and I also have numbness in it that comes and goes. Usually if I get tensed up , or maybe I walk to much , I notice it more. When I ask my Dr.s nurse about the numbness she did ask me if there was any pain associated with the numbness, she did say if there were any , then she would definitely need me to come in and see the Doctor.

when an MVD is performed, a retractor is used to separate the skin and muscle where they make the incision, from the skull where the craniotomy is made. the occiptal nerve runs through this area. it’s possible your nerve was somehow compromised during the surgery. it sometimes happens to people as a consequence. everyone has different nerves which course differently up the scalp. talk to your neurosurgeon about this possibility, and what, if anything, can be done to alleviate your pain.

Is this something that will go away
I appreciate your opinion so much
If it does go away how long does it usualy take
Thanks again

Rick,
I am sorry to hear about your pain and numbness. I had numbness for months (maybe 8 or 9 mths) across my face and I developed a slightly painful strange tingling sensation across my face after my MVD along with acquired new pain in my eye, jaw and tongue after my MVD. The numbness at the incision lasted a year. I was really concerned about AD because of the strange sensations not feeling like any TN pain I had before. And since I had so much numbness the first time, I am concerned about numbness with a second MVD.
Did the pain develop after the numbness or go along with the numbness from day one?
Liz

It happened after the surgery
