I had an MVD 2 1/2 years ago and have a titanium plate in my skull. It's always tender but sometimes it becomes very, very tender. I"m just wondering if any others with the plate in their skull still have this same problem years later.
So, KC, you don't have any tenderness there at all? I thought this might be normal. I've been sick and unhealthy ever since I had my MVD. I hate to think of going back there and having surgery again:((
No tenderness at all - what you are experiencing needs to be looked at asap!!!! Especially if it is the unknown cause of making you unhealthy. Please seek medical attention and let us know so others can be helped too!
I talked with the nurse of the doctor who did my surgery. She said the tenderness is quite common in some people. She called in occipital neuralgia. She said the nerve can be cut or I can go on neurontin. When I googled the symptoms of occipital neuralgia they didn't seem to fit. But, I described the feeling of tenderness and tightness that comes and goes in the titanium plate area and this is what she told me. Is there anyone else out there who has these symptoms?
Jamie, I also have pain around my titanium plate, my surgery was in 2010. Got to tell you first that I didn’t know till just a few months ago that I had the plate in my skull, which explains some of my pain. I had been massaging that area occasionally to maybe keep scar tissue away. I had one of the top TN Specialist do my MVD surgery, it was not successful, as a matter of fact added to the lightning bolt pains I have burning (Hot poker shoving in your face over and over again) lasting a good 45 min. plus loss of balance which my GP said “could” happen, the surgeon laughed at that saying it “could never” happen.
After the surgery I asked him if I needed a card of some kind saying I have metal in my head. He said no, you have no metal, we glued or cemented that piece of your skull back in so there is no metal. Afterward every time I have had an MRI or CT scan I go in the machine and immediately get pulled right back out asking about the barrett in my hair where the incision is. Each time I go through this story that I don’t know why, the Dr. said I didn’t have any metal then they put me back in and go on. I kept saying i was going to call and ask the surgeons office what could be there which I failed to do till just a few months ago. WOW! was I shocked to hear I had the titanium plate and screws ( she sent me notes of surgery with that info. So, now I understand more about what my pain is. It hurts in the plate area when I tense up so I try to keep from doing that. It started hurting as I am typing this. I stopped and realized I was tensed up so I relaxed and the pain is subsiding. I also can’t turn my head to the left too far or I get pain in my neck, I don’t like that tendon (or whatever it is) that runs from the incision site down my neck, takes a while to heal. And yes, it is always tender, can’t lay back in the sink at the beauty shop, I wash my hair at home before going there. I wouldn’t mind it so much if the surgery had been successful. I don’t think it will ever get better as it has been there for six years now. Looks like this post is quite old and I hope you will see it and respond how you are feeling now, is it still hurting you?
Did your dr. happen to be Dr. Lee at The Cleveland Clinic? He told me he SAW in my CT the nerves overlapping causing pain and that’s the ONLY reason I did the surgery. Afterwards he said they weren’t overlapping. I was in the worst pain of my life and then afterwards never returned to normal. I was a full-time teacher - not anymore. The site is still sore but not near as bad as a few years ago. It caused my jaw to be misaligned though and that has been a problem for me. TN is also an early symptom of Lyme disease which is what I was diagnosed with a few years after my surgery. I’d like to have the mind power and body power to go back to visit him and give him a piece of my mind!
Hi
My name is Joanne saw your note on pain at craniotomy site with pain with titanium on late and screws. Yes I have had pain since my MVD 6 years ago. I can not sleep on that side at all I get sharp nerve shocks when touched in that area. I just saw my neurosurgeon 2 weeks ago and explained that same thing to him. Having smith MRI end of may. Repeat surgery on that side because my compression was from an over large petrosal Vien. He mentioned something to me about the discomfort
Have had since surgery 6 years ago about the way nerves heal or should I say don’t heal properly. It’s something that can be surgically corrected. I will keep you posted maybe this can give you some insight on my procedure that could help you. Hang in there it’s not something other people have not experienced but can be corrected.
My Best
