I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with TN on the left side of my face. I have been on Neurontin and Tegretol and my meds just got upped again yesterday. My neurologist did an MRI with and without contrast and that came back normal. But I was wondering if there is any other test I should ask for because I have had this since since the end of August and I am only 32 years old and my doctor;s and I attribute this to an eye injury since there was nothing found on the MRI.
Hi Jennifer, sorry to read of your recent diagnosis, but glad you found us here, it’s a great place of support.
Usually you will have an MRI to rule out tumors and MS so it is Good if yr MRI comes back normal.
There really are no other tests for TN other than a neurological exam.
Diagnosis is usually made by process of elimination ( dental issues, MRI ) as well the most important diagnostic tool is your description of your pain, triggers etc.
I was 29 when I was first diagnosed a month shy of my 30th bday, TN can affect kids too. We have several parents of kids with tn that visit here.
TN can be caused by trauma to the head/neck but I don’t know a lot about it.
If you check our face pain info tab (top right of screen) you will find lots of info.
It does take time to find the right dose of meds or combo of meds until you find a therapeutic level to manage your pain.

I agree with everything Mimi just said. HUGS to you!
I had a FIESTA MRI which was much more intense and it found compressions, that would be the only other test available. Basically the diagnosis for this is done by MRI and by a series of questions , you cant make this crap up, so most of the people that are diagnosed with TN have done so purely by explanation to thier doctors.

Sorry you are dealing with this pain.
Just on 12 months down the track Since my diagnoses and I am still trying to get a medication cocktail that works for me, hope your specialist is able to find something to give you relief.
