Newbie and scared

Hi, it seems that after pulling out a cracked tooth I now have this wonderful disease. I just started tergernol and having a real hard time with it. Very sick, nauseau, dizzy, and this is only on 300 mg. He wants me up to 600! Still in pain and can’t eat. I’m very scared. How long does it take to adjust to this med if ever? What happens if it doesn’t work? I’m still in shock, it was a bad tooth how could this be?
Thanks

Have you tried gabrapentin, 300 mg every 6 hours? It helps relieve about 80-90% of the TN pain. Then at times I take 800 mg Motrin or fiorcette every 4-6 hours.

I had the same side effects with tegretol. I’m now on 600 a day, after about a week side effects stop. Every time you up a new dose side effects will probably occur but then your body adjusts.

Please see the answer I gave to your previous discussion. I am sorry, I have no explanation as to why your TN started. Often we just don't know with TN, alas.

Steph, my Dr said this is the best med for TN and to basically suck it up and it won’t start working till I reach 600mg and my body will adjust. This is so hard.

Where’s the offsite resource page?

That was my feeling but he wants me to get to 800 before I go on something else.

I hate to sound whinny but I agree and had a second opioun but my DH refuses to take me to his pain management until I finish this protocol. I have no way of getting there myself. This doctor knows how crappy I feel and tells me my body will adjust. If on 800 the pain does not go away then this med is not working and he will change it to lord only knows what!

Dear Susan, go to your chemist\oharmacy and ask what other drugs are in the family with your drug. tell him\her what side effects u r getting and see if he\she has any suggestions. Take this info to your neuro & request a change, upping the dose will not make it any easier to take. Remember it is your face and your pain.

Thank you, I did see my pharmacist who never heard of this treatment for Facial pain. I guess around here it’s pretty rare? My oral surgeon insist that this is the only drug that will work but only till you get to the 600 to 800 range. Any other drugs in the class are a waste of time. IDK I’ve dealt with major health issues with many doctors but have never been been treated so blindly unless he is right? Idk, the neuro does not agree with him that this is even TN but he is insisting that it it.

tegretol is the GO TO drug so I am told gabentin, kepra but I think they r on the last resort list

Susan, Ask your doctor if you can start on a lower dose (if it is available ) I have a problem taking drugs because I get nauseous very easily with most drugs. I started on 300mg of gabapentin and was very nauseous. I called the Nuero and he told me to stop taking it because I would have to take a much higher dose to get relief and I should go to a pain clinic. I didn’t listen to him and took it again the next day and made sure I took it with food. I was not nauseous. I went to another neuero who let me increase the dosage very slowly by increasing 100mg every few days. I am now on 3000mg per day without any nausea. I don’t know the doses available with your medication. Ask your doctor if small doses are available and if it is ask him if you can slowly increase your dose and always take your meds with food. I hope this information helps you. Gizmo

Thank you all. Yes I do take it with food.
I’m so glad for the wondeful support I’m receiving.

Hi Gizmo,
Gabapentin worked great for me to take away the pain, but I could not stand upright, saw double, and could barely find words to form a sentence. My gold standard (at present) is adding 10 mg amitriptyline (PM) and lower doses of Gaba. I take 100 gabapentine, four times a day. The two drugs together keep me pain and side-effect free. It's only if I go too long between doses that I feel pain.
Wishing you pain free days,
rissmal

Hey I take tegratol I am at the max dose of 600 my a day n it helps to a point for me but I get some dizziness a lot of short term memory issues and a lot of times when I can’t seem to be able to comprehend a lot of things that I already know but just stop but am looking for some new meds n something that helps me is to drink a half glass of milk and a piece of bread before taking the meds to bring down the nausea it may help you and I hope the pain gets better soon

Hi and welcome to this fantastic site, you’ll find all the support, love and advice that you could ever want amongst all these wonderful women, you’ll also find that most of us contracted TN after dental work…
We mostly all started on Tegretol, it’s the drug used as a first resort, I’ve taken it from the beginning, some 6 years now, I’m on 800ml a day now, but that gradually built up over years…
My advice would be to stick with it for a while, to see if your body gets used to it…then go from there, write to us anytime, all the best Anne

I have to mention to you... you can be on this medication the rest of your life... and still have break through pain... and still have to deal with balancing it...

It was a bit scary... but TAKE THE LEAP! Get the MVD surgery. It took me a year and a thorough exhaustion of every other possible fix. I tried every way out because I didn't want surgery. It looked looming. BUT being on this side of it now... I had my surgery in March 2015. I have not had one bit of pain since. Not one hair of TN pain.

Healing from the surgery was cupcakes compared to the daily TN pain. Seriously. I wish I hadn't been so nervous, and had gone ahead with it sooner. MY LIFE IS COMPLETLY NORMAL AGAIN!

Please read my whole story on my blog: curingTrigeminalNeuralgia.BlogSpot.com if you want more details about the journey, recovery, and all the details of all the meds and wholistic approaches I tried.

Hope you have comfort as you try and survive each day.

I am so sorry.

Gabapentin, 300 mg, works for me most times, unless physical stress and then I have had to go to emergency, if I did not heed my trigger and rest. I hope this helps.

Peace.
