there are lots of different names like atypical neuralgia, neuropathic pain, atypical odontalgia, burning mouth syndrome. Are they all basically the same?
and if i have burning and tingling, does that automatically mean its TN? i cant see how it could be anything else. I have bruxism but i dont see how that could cause burning sensations. It all began following articaine injections. How come some people recover after 6 months while others get TN2?
I have been told by the dentist who specialises in TN that i dont have nerve damage and that it will all go away. True or false?
I have also read that there is something called pretrigeminal neuralgia which is a period of months or even years BEFORE you get the main suicidal disease.
There are many things that overlap with these diagnoses. There are also many opinions that overlap concerning the cause of certain neurological pain, especially that which happens after a dental procedure. Some people will say it is nerve damage. With it starting immediately after an injection that does seem plausible. Then there is the other camp that says dental work can trigger TN.
We all have different symptoms, different sensations and different experiences. Yes sometimes the damage heals and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe it depends on the extent of the damage or maybe it depends on a person's ability to heal. Sometimes injuries don't heal. TN can also come and go in isolated flare ups--leaving you pain free between. Remission is also common in the beginning. I had ATN when I was 29 for a year. It went away for seven years and came back two and a half years ago.
Often times, a doctor will never be presented with a case of TN in their entire career. It makes receiving proper help and proper diagnosis pretty difficult.
The tingling, burning constant pain is atypical. It would be classified as TN2 or ATN. It seems the people I have talked to that have symptoms start after dental care experience this type of deep pain. Neuralgia means compression of the nerve. Neuropathy of unknown origin would be the AFP or neuropathic pain. Part of the problem is that detection is unreliable as well.
Did I miss that you had been to a Neurologist? Choose a good one. Get another opinion. I have messed with this monster for 15 yrs and still suffering worse then ever. Had Gamma Knife in 2008. 2010 had a MVD by the best. Now I have Anesthesia Dolorosa. So who am I to give an opinion. There are so many ideas out there. Good Luck. Wish I could help. I went to bed last light crying and tears. Truly. Just don't wait to long. I think I waited to long to get started.
