My headache specialist wants me to try a nerve block or burning before doing MVD. Has anyone done this? Is this successful? Will it affect outcome of MVD if needed in future?
I would do noooooo nerve damage , burning, cyber knife, gamma knife,
IF you want best MVD possible
Your headache guy is not an MVD GURU
Put nerve block in search box here… How many helped? How many made it worse?
I hope somebody can specifically answer this
When in doubt…send HELP. Send Message to the moderator RED…he will know!

Thanks. Yeah, I am so confused because I know a while ago when I did research gamma knife seamed to be a big no no. But my headache guy was trying to tell me that my pain dr can just go in and do a nerve block like he does for my neck and lower back pain. But I never heard of this. The nerve blocks go through the spine- I asked the headache dr how it was possible to do TN block he said can go from behind ear- but smelled a little fishy to me. Luckily it’s my PCP who has to do the final referral per insurance and he usually trusts me.
Ok, so nerve block is out. Thanks to Red I got pointed to some good info about it and didn’t seem like good option. Then… I went to the pain dr who I was referred to to do the procedure and even he said that was NOT used for long term relief.
So if anyone else was wondering, this is what MY pain dr said about nerve blocks in the trigeminal nerve:
-
It is dangerous, the area the have to go through.
-
It is normally only used as verification that the Trigeminal nerve is the problem/ is involved
-
Anesthetic only lasts about 3 - 4 hours.
Im glad you put this info here!
But what if you do not have anything pressing on the nerve? Isn't MVD not considered an option then? I was told it wasn't an option because I have atypical TN
Did an MVD surgeon tell you this? I have heard that MVD is less successful when you have atypical. But I would get some more doc opinions before final decisions.
I’ve have nerve blocks to trigeminal area above my ears and to lower part of my skull back of the head for occipital neuralgia in addition to Botox in those same areas ( Botox also in trap muscles of my neck) . The blocks are amazing they allowed me to lay on my back and side. They seem to last a week enough time to break the cycle. I get Botox every three months and do blocks for emergency breakthrough pain.
