Does anyone know anything about nerve blocks? My neurologist has scheduled one for next week and I don’t know anything about these injections. I would like to hear about somone else’s experiences. thanks, lisa
I'm having one next month and I'm having trouble finding info online as well, I'm finding bits and pieces. Here is the best description that I have found yet. If I find anything else that is of help I'll pass it on. Wishing you a pain free/less day.
Glycerol injection is generally an outpatient procedure in which the patient is sedated intravenously. A thin needle is passed through the cheek, next to the mouth, and guided through the opening in the base of the skull to where all three branches of the trigeminal nerve come together. The glycerol injection bathes the ganglion (the central part of the nerve from which the nerve impulses are transmitted) and damages the insulation of trigeminal nerve fibers.
Thank you Shelli, I am hoping we hear if anyone has had any bad experiences. That description doesn’t sound like fun, but I am tired of this pain. Lisa
Your welcome Lisa, I have been looking to see if anyone has had the bad experiences with it as well. No it doesn't sound like the greatest of experiences. The most I have found is that the injections work for some people, work for a short amount of time (around 2 yrs is average), or don't work at all. Which that thought alone isn't that comforting. Shelli
Hi,
You can google nerve block for tn, and it will tell you what I think you are looking for. I did because
I may be getting one if things don't improve soon, I think I am better the shock pain is gone so maby
the neurotin is working. Good luck on your nerve block.

Shelli (or anyone), do you know why damaging the nerve insulation helps? I assume this is the mylien sheath? I thought once you damage this it is unrepairable, which is what happens in MS. Please correct me if I am wrong

There are several different nerve blocks -- do you know which one you are getting?
I don’t know what kind I am getting. I know that sounds horrible. It was just scheduled for me… I am trying to call the dr’s office today in order to get some info.
The only thing that they have told me, because I asked the same thing is, that it stops the impulses that are shooting to the area.
