Need to take medical test and will have to stop my meds for over 24 hrs. Scared of the effects of stopping them. Please respond if you have gone through this!

I am going to the gastro doctor tomorrow and I know he will want me to have a colonoscopy because of my symptoms. I am on 3000mg per day of gabapentin, 30mg per day Baclofen’ 35 mg per day nortriptyline, and .05 mg clonazapem twice daily. I will only be able to have liquids the day before the test and I cannot take my meds on an empty stomach because I will get very nauseous. I am very scared how I will feel by not taking my meds for over 24 hours, since they say do not stop taking suddenly because you can get seizures or other bad side effects. Has anyone ever had to do this, and of,so, what were the side effects ? Please respond ASAP because I will need to know what to tell the gastro. Thank you for any help you can give me!!

Gizmo, there is absolutely NO WAY you should stop your meds for this test.
No way, no how. You will just have to increase your fluids and maybe suffer some nausea . Stopping any of these meds abruptly is very dangerous, life threatening to be honest , please consult your physician etc to confirm this perhaps you can add an anti nausea type med for this day?
Do NOT stop your meds !!! Nausea is better than dealing with the potential outcomes of stopping your meds.

Good luck with your test, sending positive thoughts…and ((( hugs ))) Mimi

Thank you Mimi for such a fast response. I will ask about an anti nausea med. will let you know what happens. Can you send a friend request since I am not sure how to do it. Thanks, Gizmo

Agreed with Min. Do not stop taking or even miss your dose of Balcofen that is a medication that can not be stopped at all. Did you let typist gastro’s office know the meds you are on can not be stopped? I believe they should have a protcol for those instances, I could be wrong. Any don’t ship or stop your medications for this. It is not worth the risks.

Hi kari, after getting Mimi’s reply I will not stop my meds and will ask about an anti nausea med. I am going to the gastro tomorrow and will explain my situation to him. I hope you are right and they have a protocol for this situation . Thank you so much for your reply. It is so comforting to know that I can come to this site with my questions and concerns and have such caring people there to help. I hope I can do the same for others on this site. Gizmo

Kari and Mimi, great news. I don’t need the colonoscopy so I don’t have to worry about the meds. Thanks for your support!!! Gizmo

Happy to hear! Hope everything is ok.
I’m not a big fan of colonoscopies but have to have them regularly as my Mom had stage 3 colon cancer 3 years ago…her colonoscopy/surgeon saved her life! She’s 3 years cancer free!
So I gladly do them!! I’ll friend request you right away!

Oh yeah! Doing a happy dance here for you:) So glad to hear that. In the future if you ever need to have a procedure done let the doctor know right away that you are taking meds that can not be stopped. That way you’ll get the other protocol instructions. There are more then a few different medications out there that can’t be stopped such as insulin, blood thinners, and Baclofen for example.

Colonoscopies are very important. They save many lives. Glad to hear your mother is cancer free for 3 years. Everything is OK with me, just need to take an over the counter med. Now if I can just find something to get rid of my terrible burning I would be fine. I pray that they find something that can help all TN sufferers. Confirmed your friend request. Thanks, Gizmo

Hi Gizmo,

To add to the above, I would suggest that you speak to your TN-treating doctor and ask if you can have some nausea meds to keep on hand. That's what I do, it has really helped to have them when I don't have access to food and have to take my meds.

Great news regarding not needing a colonoscopy.
