NEED Help for Better MEDication

I need help finding a better med for the TN, I tried carbamazepine, which helped at first, not this time, then Gabapentin which made the symptoms worst and now Oxcarmazepin 300 mg, which is starting to act like Gabapentin lately. I'm afraid to take the Oxcarmazepin now because it takes about three hours to work and then the pain moves the the lower jaw. I feel like a nervous wreck. I'm at work taking Hydrocodone, which almost puts me to sleep, then Capzasin-HP on my cheek, the nerve goes crazy on and off every couple of minutes and I get a stab in front of the top bone that is in front of my ear. When I eat something, even though I can't stand the pain, if feels like the nerve calms down for a little longer, as long as I don't move my tounge to touch my teeth on the other side of my mough. Why is that? I don't want to call my Dr. because he doesn't know anything about TN and I don't have a good Neurologyst either.

I had to be on Oxcarmazepin = Trileptal for several days at 600 then 900 I think till the pain went completely away

Have you given it enough time? It can't probably make it worse -- you just have to go up on it

It does not work in 3 hours --- it has to build up in your system. It is not to take like hydrocone =- as needed -- its take it every day don't miss dose - be at proper dose

Keep Posting!

Hi Mitzi…I take trileptal 1800mg/day, baclofen 40mg/day, cymbalta 60mg/day,and amytripyline 20mg/day…today I was completely painfree until evening when I started getting tired. It seems like a lot of meds but, I don’t take any narcotics, they never worked anyway…u need to find a good neurologist who is an expert in TN. I am blessed to have a great one at Cleveland Clinic!! I pray u find relief soon!! Don’t stop fighting!! Try a med combo of anti-seizure(like trileptal), a muscle relaxer(like baclofen), and a anti depressant(like cymbalta)…((HUGS))

Thank you Ladies, I am so blessed to have found this support group. I found out what I have been doing wrong and that is that I wasn't taking enough of the Oxcarbazepine 300 mg (which is another name for Trilptal) KC is right, thank you). I had left them at home due to the fear, as soon as I got home I took 1 and a half pills which made it 400 mg, although the paind didn't go away rightaway, I was able to eat and eventually I started getting better. I took another one before bed-time and was able to sleep ok, even woke up early this morning. As soon as I find a good neurologist I'm going to ask for the same combo that Lisa26 is taking (thank you Lisa), since I don't take any narcotics either. I just don't want to gain any weight, any suggestions? God bless all

As far as the gaining weight side effect…this is something we can actually control!! Amazing that we have control over something huh!! The meds increase your appetite but, there are ways to loose weight on the meds. I have lost 40 pounds while taking this med combo. I have done very low carb, a higher protein, and minimal fat. The more carb u eat the more hungry u will be!! Also go back to the basics. If the number of calories in is more than calories burned yes u will gain!! So this is one we can beat!!
